Over 600 wrestlers competed in the 2024 tournament. But only a select few can call themselves champions
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Over 600 wrestlers packed into the Alaska Airlines Center this past weekend with a single goal, to become a state champion. Now, we know who’s claimed their spot at the top of the mountain.On the 10th anniversary of girl wrestlers being granted a sanctioned state championship event in the sport, the Soldotna Stars have run it back. Sohi repeats as the girls' team champion after finishing with a final score of 169.
“I think it’s awesome for our program,” the sophomore wrestler said. “For us to do it again, It’s just really special and it shows how much we’ve been working.”For the first time in program history, the Student Wrestling Development Program has earned the team state championship title. Based in Fairbanks, SWDP became the first program not named South or Colony to bring home the title since Lathrop did so back in 2018. Also based in Fairbanks, SWDP’s final score of 357.
“It’s really cool because four years ago it was just me and four freshmen coming to state. Now they’re all seniors and the team has grown and the seniors have taken that team to a title,” SWDP head coach Westley Bockert said. “That makes everything that we worked on and worked for and all the summers we sacrificed mean a lot because this is all we worked for.”Following back-to-back top-ten finishes the previous two seasons, Mt. Edgecumbe is the King of Division II.
