A total solar eclipse will pass over Central Texas on April 8, 2024, but cloudy weather may obstruct the view for observers in the region during the event.

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will pass over parts of Central Texas , but cloudy weather conditions may obscure the view for observers in the region. On Monday, April 8th is the day we've been waiting on for quite some time.

A total solar eclipse will move across portions of Central Texas for the first time in hundreds of years. Areas just along and west into the Hill Country are under the "Path of Totality" or the area that will be directly under the moon's shadow when it tracks across the region. People in these areas will experience total darkness at totality. The partial eclipse begins around 12:15 PM for southern areas of the Hill Country and will continue to track northeast further along the region. When viewing the partial eclipse, you HAVE to wear your eclipse glasses at ALL TIMES. Areas will start to experience totality starting around 1:33 PM in the Hill Country and other areas just seconds or minutes later. During totality, you can remove your glasses to view the eclipse. Some areas in the Hill Country will experience totality for 3 to 4 minutes as they are closer to the center of totality while others closer to the edge will only experience it for 1 to 2 minutes. Once totality ends for the area, you have to put your glasses back on the view the eclipse once again. The overall eclipse experience ends just before 3 PM. For those on the fence on if you want to stay where you are or go into the path or totality... DO IT! It is literally a night and day difference for those experiencing the path of totality and just the partial eclipse. Now after pumping you up on wanting to see the eclipse... here's the bad news. Clouds are expected during the eclipse viewing time. High clouds are a definite which if transparent enough, would allow us to still see the eclipse. But as predicted, low clouds are expected during this timeframe as well. Hi-res models are showing the possibility of a few breaks in the low-level cloud coverage at times that would allow us to get a couple peaks of the eclipse at times. This would be best case scenario. Worst case scenario would be thick, dense low clouds with no breaks at all in between along with the possibility of showers... This would FULLY obscure the eclipse and all it would do is get dark during full totality for locations in that path. Let's hope for some breaks in the coverage... The picture above shows what skies could potentially look like during totality in Austin. Again, mostly cloudy skies will obscure your view of the eclipse for most of the event. A few breaks here and there would allow you to get some glimpses at times. A few breaks here and there is much better than total overcast. Don't forget to wear the appropriate eclipse glasses when viewing the partial eclipse. Remember, if you're located in the full totality path, you can take off your glasses and view the total eclipse with you eyes.Stay Connected
