Gemma Chan as Maya in The Creator
2023 featured a few big-budget movies with visions of an artificially intelligent future. M3GAN presented an AI doll with deadly levels of loyalty; Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One saw Ethan Hunt fight the all-powerful “Entity”, and a world torn apart by the impact of technology in The Creator.
While the first two were box office successes, director Gareth Edwards’ film came and went without much fanfare. While AI gone awry has been the antagonist of many movies, The Creator asked more complicated questions, and perhaps didn’t find the audience it was expecting. However, with technology advancing at a rate no one expected, has the overlooked sci-fi movie become pertinent enough to be revisited? Gareth Edwards Creates a Dystopian AI Future The film takes place in 2070, 15 years after a nuclear bomb triggered by Artificial Intelligence has obliterated Los Angeles. The Western world pledges to eradicate AI, which is now its own kind of species with simulants present in everyday life. The Western world seeks to eradicate AI in response to the Los Angeles attack, while a continent called New Asia harbors them as equals to humans. John David Washington plays Joshua, a former Army sergeant with a hatred for AI who is tasked with finding a simulant who holds the key to a new weapon developed by AI forces. When he discovers that simulant is a small child , he begins to question everything he thought he knew. Posts 9 By Marcel Ardivan Edwards recreated a futuristic world when he brought us back to the original Star Wars trilogy in the prequel Rogue One. This time, he creates his own future, and it’s stunning to observe. From the stunning space station NOMAD, which plays a pivotal part in the film, to the gritty streets of the future that mix past with present, he creates something that feels both tangible and fantastic. Better still, his story has an emotional core that isn’t always present in dystopian sci-fi. Joshua has to re-assess who he is, and what he stands for, given the innocence of his new traveling companion. The script also asks questions of ourselves, as well as about technology. 'The Creator' Discusses Technology Replacing Human Beings The movie speaks to worst-case scenarios that have been present in science fiction for decades. What happens when a computer becomes so intelligent it makes humanity obsolete? How do we differentiate between human and machine when the latter begins to seem lifelike? The compelling thing about The Creator is that the story also makes us the problem. Much of the wider conflict in the film comes from humans determined to wipe out AI, who, it is eventually revealed, want nothing more than peace. Paranoia, not technology, drives the real moral collapse of society, as instead of confronting this fear with nuance, the West responds with pre‑emptive violence, surveillance, and dehumanization. It’s the line-in-the-sand approach of characters like Colonel Howell , a ruthless human army colonel who is driven by grief, that shows one of the greater threats of an uncertain future: that we lose sight of who we are. It's an unexpectedly layered discussion that makes the human race's own tendency for self-destruction at the heart of the apocalyptic narrative. Rather than offering a simple story of man vs machine, Edwards asks us to look deeper. 'The Creator' Proved Ahead of Its Time At the time of its release, many of the points that Edwards’ film made about AI were hypothetical. At that point, it was about what this new technology could be capable of, both in good ways and bad. Just three years on, the conversation has taken a different turn. AI is capable of visuals that are indistinguishable from reality, and the fear of replacement is real for people in many different industries and crafts. As such, a discussion about the value of human endeavor has emerged that feels pertinent to what The Creator explores. The movie takes it to an extreme end, where AI has gained sentience, and the question arises whether synthetic rights are less than human. Moreover, does our fear of replacement rob us of our humanity as we seek to wipe out any threats to human progress? These broad, heavy subjects might have felt too far ahead just a few years ago, but play out in news headlines every day currently. It’s to Edwards’ credit that elements of the story seem almost prophetic, like a warning from the future, telling us not to lose too much of ourselves in the name of innovation or survival. The Creator underperformed at the box office, making $103 million worldwide against an $80 million budget. Still, that puts it in esteemed company when it comes to science fiction. Blade Runner, Event Horizon, and Tron were all visions of the future that were not popular with audiences at the time of their release, only to be considered visionary classics in later years. As our understanding of the story’s themes evolves in the real world, perhaps The Creator will receive the same re-evaluation.
