Cillian Murphy stares into the monitor, surrounded by green computer graphics, in Sunshine
Sunshine is one of those sci-fi movies people discover years later and immediately wonder why it was not bigger. Danny Boyle’s 2007 thriller has the scale of a major studio space movie, the mood of something much stranger, and the kind of cast that looks even better in hindsight.
It is sleek, intense, and far more unsettling than its premise might first suggest. Even now, it still feels different from most big-screen sci-fi because it is not just interested in survival or spectacle. It is also interested in fear, belief, sacrifice, and what happens to people when they are asked to carry the weight of the whole world, and Tubi will start streaming it for free on April 1. Set in a future where the sun is dying, the movie follows a team of astronauts sent on a desperate mission to reignite it. Written by Alex Garland, Sunshine mixes hard sci-fi tension with existential dread in a way that still feels distinctive almost twenty years later. The setup is simple enough, but the movie keeps getting more intense as the mission starts to fall apart. Boyle brings a real sense of scale to the ship, the silence of space, and the terrifying idea that even being close to the sun can feel like staring at something almost spiritual. The cast includes Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong, and Mark Strong. Related The Battle of the Chrises — The Collider Movie Quiz! Roger Ebert's review stated that Sunshine is at its best when it leans into the scale and ambition of its sci-fi premise, delivering a visually striking and thought-provoking journey toward the sun. The film’s central idea — reigniting a dying star — is grounded just enough in theoretical science to feel believable, which adds to its appeal for fans who enjoy more “hard” sci-fi concepts. "The actors are effective by trying not to be too effective; they almost all play professional astronaut/scientists, and not action-movie heroes. The design of the ship itself is convincing; it looks like the inside of a computer used as the bunkhouse at a boys’ camp. The special effects in outer space are convincing and remorseless. The drummed-up suspense at the end is not essential, since Boyle and Garland seem more interested in the metaphysics of the voyage; Tarkovsky’s 'Solaris' demonstrated that if you go all the way with the implications of such a situation, it’s more interesting than using plot devices."
