Once accepted by DESNZ, the GDA process for SMR design to generate nuclear fusion energy is expected to begin by Spring 2025.France-based Newcleo has applied to the United Kingdom’s Department of Energy Security and Net Zero to enter its lead-cooled small modular reactor for generating fusion energy in the generic design assessment phase.
DESNZ is in charge of requesting the initiation of a GDA process – followed by a successful application. Newcleo aims to complete a two-step GDA with the ONR and EA, including regulators’ fundamental assessment of their technology.Newcleo is working on the lead-cooled fast reactors technology for generating nuclear fusion energy.Some other interesting insights about Newcleo’s SMR are that it operates at atmospheric pressure, and the company also states that no significant energy release occurs in cases of vessel failure. This also eliminates the need for high-pressure-resistant containment.
Newcleo’s concept was one of only two Advanced Modular designs to be selected, making it an endorsement of the role the LFR could play in the delivery of a new European energy mix and recognition of the advanced potential of the design for generating power from fusion.by the company reveals that since 2021, it has raised over $567 million from institutional and individual investors.
