) - Approximately $ 2.5 million in federal COVID relief money is still available for local businesses in Montgomery , but the Montgomery City Council has not yet begun the process that would allow entrepreneurs to apply for assistance.
The issue was tabled at Tuesday night’s city council meeting, raising concerns that if the money is not awarded soon, it could revert back to the federal government. Montgomery City Councilman Andrew Szymanski says sending the money back would be a major missed opportunity for small business owners. “Well, I think anytime that you take $2.5 million that could have gone in the pockets of small business owners and hand it back to the federal government, we’ve made a huge mistake there,” Szymanski said.“In general, the plan is to have all of these funds allocated and out the door by November,” Szymanski said. “That is the timetable with the federal government, and if we don’t hit that timeline, any money that is not spent at that point, just has to go back to the federal government.” He says that’s why he wants the council to begin the application process now, giving businesses time to apply and the city time to distribute the grants before the deadline.Montgomery City Council member Charles W. Jinright said he supports the concept of helping businesses but wants to ensure the program includes the right safeguards. “I think there’s no question that you need it, but you got to make sure it’s done right,” Jinright said. “There’s so many questions in this, could it be controlled properly? We want to make sure it’s controlled properly so that the people who need it, get it.” Szymanski said he understands how difficult it can be for small businesses to gain traction, a local business owner himself. “I know very intimately, the challenges and struggles that small businesses go through in scaling up and getting their foothold in the community,” he said.Man killed in Monday Montgomery shooting ‘She was more than a case in a courtroom’: Father of Aniah Blanchard feels ‘peace’ after her killer is found guiltyIran rejects US ceasefire plan, issues its own demands as strikes land across the MideastSouth Alabama man arrested on sexual assault charge
