Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz won the U.S. Open, his first Grand Slam title. At 19, he becomes the youngest man to be world No. 1.
As Carlos Alcaraz ground his way to the U.S. Open final, he seemed to defy everything anyone knew about the way tennis players’ bodies are supposed to work.
On Sunday night, Alcaraz finally got there. He defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 to complete a championship run that took him more than 23 total hours, breaking the all-time record for time spent on court by a man at a Grand Slam tournament. After match point, he could be forgiven for lying down.
Ruud, 23, was also chasing his first Grand Slam championship on Sunday. But for the second time this year, the new world No. 2 ran into a powerful Spaniard who didn’t play his age. At Roland-Garros, he fell in three sets to a 36-year-old Nadal, who rolled back the years for his 14th French Open title. And in New York, Ruud simply couldn’t crack the speed, variety, and shot-making intelligence of the teenager across the court from him.
Tmiraculous thing about Alcaraz’s game is that it resembles no one else’s. “If he steps in, he can do anything with the ball,” Ruud said before the match. “He can rip a winner. He also has great touch with the dropshot.”
