Pea River’s hydroelectric dam is a staple in Elba and while it’s set to be removed, the importance of the people of Elba having control over what comes next has been emphasized.
ELBA , Ala. - 110 years ago, the Elba Hydroelectric Dam was created, but due to an event 9 years ago, there have been problems ever since. “Back in 2015, a major storm compromised the dam,” said Lisa Harris, Executive Director for the Choctawhatchee Pea and Yellow Rivers Watershed Authority.
“It’s now a hazard to fisherman and other individuals.”“What worries me is that younger people may be out there having fun and try to jump off the structure into the water, or go into the powerhouse,” said Harris. “The turbines are pretty deep down and if they fall in could cause harm or even death.”Lisa Harris knew the removal of the dam was needed, which is why the watershed authority sought out $3.7 million in federal grant money to make it possible. “The removal could help with flooding,” said Harris. “The natural flow of the river is always better. The removal can also provide recreational opportunities and economic benefits for the local area.”“They come twice a year up the Pea River to spawn,” said Harris. “Removing the structure will allow them to freely go up the stream to their natural habitat. Pea River’s hydroelectric dam is a staple in Elba and while it’s set to be removed, Harris emphasized the importance of the people of Elba having control over what comes next. “Part of this process will be a lot of public outreach,” said Harris. “We want the local people to tell us what they want to happen for the area after it’s gone.” This project has been in the works for over 20 years and Lisa says she’s happy it’s finally come to fruition. Harris added that part of the project includes restoring the river’s boat ramp, which was also damaged by a storm.and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
