An 11-year-old was shot in the leg at an elementary school playground. Police say another 11-year-old was taken into custody.
An 11-year-old was injured in a shooting on Sunday evening at the playground of an elementary school in Crandall, authorities said. Crandall police said officers were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. to Opal Smith Elementary School on the 3000 block of Fletcher Road in the Heartland community after a report of a shooting at the playground.
When officers arrived, they found an 11‑year‑old child with a gunshot wound to the leg.The child was treated at the scene by CareFlite and airlifted to the Children’s Hospital in Dallas. Medical staff later notified police that the injury did not appear to be life‑threatening and that the child was in stable condition. Police said another 11-year-old child was taken into custody and is believed to be the shooter. Investigators described the incident as isolated and involving only the two juveniles.Officials didn’t specify whether the shooting was accidental or intentional, and have not shared more details on how the child got hold of the gun. It’s unknown if it was an adult or the children who had initially called 911. Investigators said they believe this was an isolated incident involving only the two children and added there is no ongoing threat to students or staff.Crandall Independent School District administrators notified parents late Sunday night that the school will be open on Monday and will operate on a normal schedule. The district said additional counselors will be on campus to support students and staff.
