A man faces child endangerment charges after one of his children discovered his gun and accidentally shot their sibling in Akron.CLEVELAND, Ohio – An 11-year-old boy accidentally shot his 8-year-old brother Thursday as they were playing with their father’s gun, Akron police say.
Akron police said the older child had his father’s weapon at about 8 p.m. in a home in the 1100 block of Hardesty Boulevard. The weapon went off, accidentally wounding the 8-year-old in the chest, Akron Police Capt. Michael Miller said. The child’s mother began driving him to a hospital before pulling over and calling 911, Miller said. When officers arrived, they applied a chest seal until EMS came and transported the child to Akron Children’s Hospital. He was in stable condition, Miller said.
On Friday, Miller encouraged gun owners to lock up their firearms, particularly if children are in the home. For those who cannot afford a gun safe or similar device, Akron police offer free gun locks, Miller said. To get a gun lock, call the department’s community relations office at 330-375-2390. “It takes very little additional effort to secure a firearm,” Miller said. “It’s a step worth saving lives, particularly the lives of children.”
