Daniel Radcliffe smiling on a red carpet for Lost City

After Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe made a real habit of picking projects that pushed him far away from the boy-wizard image. He picked a movie that had a farting corpse. He got naked on Broadway. And yet, this one might be the oddest, as Imperium is one of the strongest examples of that career path.

It is serious, ugly, and deliberately uncomfortable, with Radcliffe disappearing into a world of violent extremism in a way that still feels pretty striking. Tubi will add it for free on April 1. Released in 2016, the film stars Radcliffe as a young FBI agent who goes undercover inside a white supremacist organization while investigating a possible domestic terror plot. It is based in part on the experiences of former FBI agent Michael German, and it plays as a tense, grounded thriller rather than something flashy or sensationalized. The cast includes Radcliffe as Nate Foster, Toni Collette as Angela Zamparo, Tracy Letts as Dallas Wolf, Sam Trammell as Gerry Conway, Nestor Carbonell as Tom Hernandez, and Burn Gorman as Morgan. Is 'Imperium' Worth Watching? Collider’s review stated that Imperium is a tense and uncomfortable thriller that pulls the audience directly into the world of white supremacy, trading distance for a much more intimate — and unsettling — experience. Unlike other films that explore similar themes from afar, this one puts both its main character and the viewer right in the middle of it. The cast is a major strength. Radcliffe leads the film and delivers one of the best performances of his career, balancing fear, control, and moments where his cover almost slips. The review also highlighted strong supporting performances from Tracy Letts and Sam Trammell, who bring a grounded but chilling presence to their roles. "On the technical side, the film suffers from certain marks of a first-time director: uneven pacing plagues the first act of the film and the script seems occasionally afraid to go quite as far as one might think this sort of film arguably should. But the whole effect of Imperium is of a film that’s found a satisfying combination of genre thrills and real-life implications, resulting in a movie that, if not the first to tackle the subject matter, is certainly one of the best."
