Adam Scott in Severance The We We Are having a conversation at a house party.

Plot twists in TV shows are always exciting, shocking viewers when something happens that they never saw coming. There have been some fantastic plot twists through the decades, from who shot JR in Dallas to the reveal of virtually every killer in Only Murders in the Building.

But some plot twists really throw viewers for a loop, leaving them in awe at the incredible writing. There are a few TV show plot twists in recent years that are so good, I wish I could watch them for the first time again and again. In some cases, they've somehow gotten even better on a second or third viewing. 10 The Rhys Reveal in 'You' Season 4, Episode 7 “Good Man, Cruel World” In the penultimate season of You, Joe is coming undone. He winds up with a dead man’s body in his home, and his wealthy friends keep dropping like flies. He finds one confidante in Rhys Montrose , an author and mayoral candidate he meets at a party whose campaign hinges on his traumatic upbringing, which is much like Joe’s. Rhys, however, is revealed to be the Eat the Rich Killer in Episode 5, which ends the two-part release of the season. The massive twist, one of the most shocking in the series overall, comes in Part 2 when Joe starts to dissociate and he realizes that Rhys isn’t really Rhys — he’s just a figment of Joe’s imagination, a representation of his deepest, darkest desires. The real Rhys was kidnapped by Joe, tied up, and left for dead. It’s in this realization that everything comes crashing down on Joe, and he comes undone once he figures out that all those things that happened were at his hands. It was a wide-eyed moment for even viewers who saw the twist coming, but it makes sense when looking back and realizing no one else ever interacted with Rhys when he was in a room with Joe. 9 Mr. Robot Isn’t Real Season 1, Episode 9 “eps1.8_m1rr0r1ng.qt” The reveal in Mr. Robot is one that makes you want to flip back and re-watch everything up to that point, seeing every moment in an entirely different light. In fact, I did just that. Elliot Alderson is a reclusive hacker who works with a group called fsociety. It’s all arranged by a mysterious man named Mr. Robot , who guides Elliot along in everything he does, urging him to take down the conglomerate E. Corp. In Season 1, Episode 8, Elliot comes to the shocking realization that not only is Darlene his sister that he doesn’t even remember, but that Mr. Robot is actually his father. In Episode 9, it’s revealed that Mr. Robot was the name of his father’s computer repair shop. Following his death, Elliot began hallucinating seeing his father as a manifestation of his alter-ego, yet another personality he takes on when having an episode of his dissociative identity disorder . Mind, blown. 8 The Red Wedding in 'Game of Thrones' Season 3, Episode 9 “The Rains of Castamere” This episode might have a different title, but it will forever be known as the Red Wedding episode of Game of Thrones. Everything begins swimmingly with the celebration of the nuptials between Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey . But while the belief is that Walder Frey is fine with Robb Stark’s decision not to marry his daughter, he’s anything but. Following the ceremony, the Freys viciously attack, first killing Robb’s pregnant wife, Talisa , then moving on to others in an all-out massacre. If this wasn’t terrifying enough, Robb is killed by Roose Bolton before being able to flee. Devastated by the reality of what is happening, Catelyn slashes Joyeuse’s throat, and the same happens to her by Black Walder Rivers . It’s an outright bloodbath. While the episode is tough to watch, true fans know it’s one of the show’s essential episodes. 7 Sophia Walks Out of The Barn in 'The Walking Dead' Season 2, Episode 7 “Pretty Much Dead Already” Through all of Season 2 of The Walking Dead up to this point, the group had been trying to survive on Hershel’s farm while desperately searching for Sophia . All but Daryl had given up, resigning themselves to the likelihood that she’s probably long dead and gone. After screaming at the group in anger when he discovers that Hershel has been hoarding walkers in his barn, believing they might soon find a cure to bring them back, Shane does the unthinkable. He opens the doors, forcing everyone to start shooting and stabbing to kill them all. Once the dust settles, two little feet are seen ambling out and the camera pans up to reveal it’s a turned Sophia. Daryl holding back a sobbing Carol , urging her not to look, Rick’s sad face , and even Shane recognizing the emotional toll of the scene left me with chills. 6 Frank Kills Zoe in 'House of Cards' Season 2, Episode 1 “Chapter 14” Going all the way back to one of Netflix’s first-ever original series, House of Cards came out of the gate strong thanks in large part to the tremendous performances of the leads, including Robin Wright as Claire Underwood and Kate Mara as Zoe Barnes. But when Season 2 came around, something happened that no one saw coming. It was important to drive the narrative forward and showcase Frank’s true evil character, but it happened so quickly and callously that I was taken aback. Frank showed that if someone got in his way, he was willing to take them down by any means necessary. Zoe’s mere suggestion that Congressman Peter Russo was murdered was all Frank needed to hear before pushing Zoe in front of an oncoming metro train. Wait, what? Chances are that viewers had to rewind like I did to confirm that we saw what we just saw. 5 Rita’s Death in 'Dexter' Season 4, Episode 12 “The Getaway” Marking the end of what was Dexter’s best season, Rita , the moral center — the sweet, kind, and understanding wife — was gone. What made it so impactful was that no one saw it coming. The indirect result of Dexter’s own actions, she is killed by Trinity Killer , one of the best single-season TV villains, incidentally, his last act before Dexter kills him. When Dexter returns home and finds Rita slumped over in the bathtub filled with bloody water, his baby son Harrison crying on the floor in a pool of her blood, my hand went over my mouth, and I couldn’t get over it for days. I wouldn’t just give anything to see this scene again — I had to mentally prepare for the scene upon my rewatch, even though I knew it was coming. It still gave me chills seeing the tragic end of one of the show’s most beloved characters. 4 Jesse Learns Walt Poisoned Brock in 'Breaking Bad' Season 5, Episode 11 “Confessions” It’s not until near the end of Breaking Bad that this moment is revealed, and it’s one that you have to rewatch to believe. While it was clear by that time that Walter White had become a very different person, there were still lines I felt he wouldn’t cross. Letting Jane die was one of them, but it seemed like that was the most egregious act he had committed up to that point. That is, until a sobering reveal. After Brock fell ill, Jesse was convinced that he was poisoned by ricin stolen by Gus . Walt even comes up with a lie that Gus did this to frame Walt and turn Jesse against him. But when Jesse learns from Huell that he got the ricin cigarette for Walt and Gus didn’t have it, Jesse puts two and two together. Walt used the Lily of the Valley plant from his own backyard to poison an innocent young boy to further his own interests. It was a deplorable act — one that made fans who might still have been on Walt’s side even then change their tune. 3 Oh Il-nam Created the Games in 'Squid Game' Season 1, Episode 9 “One Lucky Day” The entirety of Squid Game’s first season was shocking, but the big reveal at the end that Oh Il-nam wasn’t really a player but rather the creator of the games left me shook. Believing that Il-nam was dead, Seong Gi-hun received an invitation a year later and found Il-nam on his deathbed. The old man reveals that he created the games simply to entertain bored and wealthy people like him, a sick realization for a character that fans had rooted for all the way through. In his final moments, Il-nam tries to prove to Gi-hun that all humanity is lost by pointing out an unconscious homeless man in the street. He believes no one will help him and gives it until the clock strikes midnight to see. Just in time, someone lends a hand, but Il-nam dies shortly after, never admitting to Gi-hun that he was wrong. The entire scene is one worth re-watching. 2 The Truth in Black Mirror’s 'White Bear' Season 2, Episode 2 “White Bear” Every episode of Black Mirror has a tragic plot twist that turns heads once it’s revealed, but arguably none are as devastating as “White Bear,” one of the most shocking Black Mirror episodes. A woman is being relentlessly chased by masked men, unsure of where she is and what is happening. She’s desperate for help but is completely ignored. It’s frightening, and you can’t help but feel for her in this situation. That is, until the twist comes. It's all a show in front of an audience — a staged horror scene. The woman, revealed to be named Victoria, abducted and murdered a young girl, filming the entire thing. Her accomplice boyfriend died by suicide, but Victoria was sentenced to a life of reliving the horror she put this girl through. The psychological punishment, named after the girl Jemima’s stuffed teddy bear, is designed to be unbearable. Victoria’s memories are wiped each time, so she suffers the same fate again and again. Never has an episode left me feeling such disdain for someone I initially felt sympathy for upon learning the truth. 1 Gemma is Alive in 'Severance' Season 1, Episode 9 “The We We Are” One of the most brilliantly frustrating season finales of all time, Severance ends its first season with a moment that left people adjusting their remotes and rewinding to check that they didn’t miss something. When Mark gets his innie limited time in the outside world, he comes across a photo of him and his deceased wife, Gemma , in his sister’s bedroom. The face is instantly recognizable as that of Dr. Casey from Lumon. His wife is not only still alive, but he has been interacting with her this whole time. Seeing his face when this recognition hits, along with his screaming, “She’s alive!” had me screaming at the TV. Especially since he’s cut off immediately after those two words because Milchick has tackled Dylan and taken the overtime contingency off. Watching it again, even after seeing how the events play out in Season 2, is chilling. It’s worth noting that the Season 2 finale episode has a plot twist that’s just as emotionally charged, easily in contention with this one, as another worth watching again . Go ahead and try not to scream or bang your fist after seeing it every single time.
