These unpredictable horror TV shows never have a dull moment and contain numerous plot twists, from American Horror Story to Dark.

The plot twist is a narrative device used to keep things interesting by abruptly taking the story in a new direction, usually by revealing key pieces of information previously withheld from the audience.

It's something that a lot of horror movies and shows use, as it's one of the most important tropes of the genre. This is to be expected, but it isn't always easy to pull off, as it has to be done in a way that makes sense. Many believe that the best plot twists are the ones that are hard to see coming, but this doesn't mean a horror show should include nonsensical plot twists solely for the sake of unpredictability. The best horror plot twists are ones that can't be seen coming, but that make a lot of sense in retrospect. Even better is when horror shows use this formula multiple times, to the point where audiences will never be able to tell what's coming next. These are the most unpredictable horror shows, which provide viewers with an endless amount of plot twists that will never be anticipated. 10 'Sharp Objects' Created by Marti Noxon Sharp Objects is an HBO series based on a book of the same name by Gillian Flynn, and follows a crime reporter who has recently been released from a psychiatric hospital. She returns home only to be met with more work as a murder mystery springs up. This should be business as usual, except for the fact that the reporter's overbearing mother is breathing down her neck, complicating things more than they already are. As with any mystery-based psychological horror, multiple questions are raised about whether or not what's going on is really as it seems. The difference is that this one turns the complexity of the story up to eleven, making things much more difficult to decipher. It may not be the most complex story ever crafted, but the show was praised by critics for its ability to keep people guessing and on the edge of their seats. This ranges from ghosts to monsters to cults, and there's not a whole lot that's off the table. Though each season is its own self-contained story and there isn't much continuity between seasons, the plot twists within each series more than make up for it. Some seasons, naturally, aren't quite as good as others, but with how long the series has been on the air, there's bound to be some brilliant twists that are hard to anticipate. This is more true for the earlier seasons, as this is when the series was at its peak. In any case, many of these earlier episodes contain some pretty baffling and shocking gut punches, from minor hiccups and sinister revelations to major tone reversals. This movie, which surely needs no introduction, follows a string of murders at a hotel, which is believed to be the doing of the owner's mother. Psycho is home to one of the most well-executed and iconic movie plot twists of all time, as well as one of the most terrifying endings. As a result of this, the prequel series to the movie, Bates Motel had some big shoes to fill when it came to providing plot twists. It may not have quite lived up to the reputation of the movie, but it honestly did a pretty darn good job as far as horror shows go. There are lots of plot twists that do keep things interesting, many of which are hard to see coming if not as perfectly executed as the one in the movie. Still, it's a wonderful prequel series to an even more wonderful movie, one that is sure to keep audiences guessing. This South Korean horror thriller follows a group of individuals who participate in a series of childhood playground games with the promise of a cash reward for the winner. Before they even know what's happening, however, they are trapped, and losing the games often has deadly repercussions. It's a show that's honestly pretty messed up, one that isn't afraid to mess with viewers' heads or what they believe to be true, because the narrative is so much more than it appears at face value. The administration of the game makes things seem deceptively simple, but with each new episode, more and more is revealed, and the story becomes some sort of sick psychological game, not just for the characters, but for the audience, too. It really is hard to tell how things are going to go in this, especially since many of the games are based on chance rather than skill, so there's rarely any opportunity to predict who's going to snuff it next. The story takes place in the Kingdom of Joseon, which once encompassed the Korean Peninsula. As the King of Joseon dies of smallpox, the tyrannical Haewon Cho clan that he married into tries to preserve their title to the throne by collecting parasites from a mythical flower, which allows them to bring the King back from the dead. Unfortunately, this unleashes a zombie horde upon the land, which gradually grows to the point that it cannot be controlled. The zombies in this show make The Walking Dead look like Sesame Street, as they are much more of a threat and by far more unique. They are incredibly versatile and deadly, meaning anybody can be offed at any time. This, combined with the political narrative of the story, leaves room for a lot of narrative twists, as Kingdom's memorable and lovable cast of characters learn about the nature of the infection and goes through a lot of trial and error to discover how to combat it. The show takes place over two timelines: one in the past, where a family becomes bombarded with phantoms and spirits in the eponymous hilltop manor, and another set two and a half decades later, where the family discusses how their time in the home affected them. Even though the story is vastly different from the source material, the energy is very much the same, with both being absolutely terrifying and rife with twists and turns. This show is home to one of the most iconic TV plot twists of all time, one that nobody saw coming, and that is probably known to people who haven't even seen the show. This isn't the only twist in the show, of course, but it is by far the most famous and is a testament to how the show can hit like a ton of bricks at times, especially because it's impossible to guess what's going to happen next. This wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the nightmarish beings that consistently attack the townsfolk, turning the town into a purgatory-like dimension outside of space and time, one that is practically a dystopian hellscape, with people struggling to survive and maintain their sanity in the terrifying conditions. From's entire premise is a riddle wrapped in a mystery, leaving so many unanswered questions while providing very few answers. As audiences try to piece things together, they will likely get no closer to the actual solution, because what has been revealed so far continues to puzzle its viewers. With how intriguing and mystifying it is, it's best to just take things as one sees them, because there's little one can do to prepare themselves for the narrative bombshells the show drops. The German series is set in the town of Winden, where children begin inexplicably vanishing at an alarming rate. As conspiracies unravel and secrets are revealed, the viewer comes to understand the darkest parts of the town's history, as well as the four main families that live there. Dark might not be as viewed as some other thriller or horror series, but it absolutely should be, because the quality is seriously high, to the point where it is likely to become known as one of the greatest or most revolutionary shows of all time. The main reason for this reputation is, of course, the writing, which keeps things consistently exciting by introducing numerous plot twists, all of which are impossible to guess until it's happening. The show presents itself as an ordinary murder mystery, but things quickly fly off the rails, delving into surrealism and psychological horror. This all comes from the brilliant mind of David Lynch, who has developed something of a reputation for his surreal and psychedelic horror films. With how experienced Lynch is at providing hungry viewers with narrative enigmas and complex stories that weave back and forth in a series of plot twists, it should be no surprise to anyone that Twin Peaks follows much of this same style, and always seems to come out of nowhere with the things it reveals. The 2017 revival of the show proved to be just as brilliant as the original, finally providing some closure to some of the series' most baffling mysteries. It's a show that has been revived numerous times, but none of its incarnations hold a candle to the original series from the 1950s and 60s. Because it's an anthology, each episode has its own self-contained story, with a coherent conclusion at the end. As a result of this, almost every single episode contains a major plot twist, and they're nearly impossible to see coming. As it touches on aspects of extraterrestrial life, time travel, and dark magic, the series delivers curveball after curveball, which can easily floor any viewer. Regardless of what the viewer might predict is going to happen, they will almost always be wrong, which is part of the show's appeal. With how many brilliant plot twists are in the show, there's very little question that it's the most unpredictable horror show ever, if not the most unpredictable show of all time in general.
