Jean Smart's Deborah Vance awkwardly hugging Hannah Einbinder's Ava Daniels in Hacks.

Generational clashing has never been as amusing as Hacks. Jean Smart as stand-up comedian Deborah Vance is the embodiment of “you can’t joke about anything anymore.” On the other hand, Hannah Einbinder, as Deborah’s reluctant young writer Ava is the living picture of the millennial/Gen Z self-absorbedness.

Mixing these two strong personalities through Hacks has elevated a battle that’s usually reduced to disagreements and mockery between generations. Deborah and Ava humanize the process, adding nuance to what each one feels and perceives, never losing sight of the fact that they both have remarkable qualities and flaws. The third season of Hacks sees their relationship evolve on a level that brings them both nearer to the success they pursue. At the end of Season 2, Deborah pushed Ava away so she could spread her wings and go beyond stand-up comedy. And while Ava is now on the cusp of her writing career, she finds herself looped into Deborah’s orbit once again. Season 3 sees them climbing to new heights, all while Deborah tries to achieve her dream job – as a late-night talk show host. Ava and Deborah’s Dynamic Takes an Interesting Turn in ‘Hacks’ Season 3 After taking their separate ways, Ava finds success in L.A. by being part of On the Contrary’s writing staff. Now in a relationship with Ruby , she’s reached a level of stability she’d never had. Deborah, on her side, finds herself again in the spotlight following the selling out of her DVD special. She finds everyone around her to be complacent, even the audiences with which she doesn’t have to try anymore to get them to laugh. Even at these new heights, both of them still have a void in them, signaling that, somehow, they’re still not done with each other. With her show on hiatus, Ava couldn’t resist returning to Las Vegas to work with Deborah. Her actions drive a wedge in her relationship with Ruby, but make it clear she hasn’t lost sight of her ambitions. Thus, Ava lives temporarily under Deborah’s roof. This makes for a further examination of their bond and their motivations. Deborah has been moved by Ava to the point where she now understands the world better and stands up to the insensitive jokes of male comedians she once saw as idols. During a hike, Deborah bares her soul to Ava, revealing the late-night talk show was the time of day that everyone was happy at her home. Paired with her knowing she’s not getting any younger, the late-night opening is her last chance at achieving her life goal. The unraveling between themselves starts to spill into the relationships with those around them. During Christmas, a gathering at Deborah’s mansion challenges Ava to make peace with her mother Nina’s weirdness. But it’s Deborah who makes even more emotional progress during the holiday. The much-delayed reencounter with her sister Kathy – who had an affair with Deborah’s ex-husband – finally allows them to vent and start their healing process. But soon after, an uncomfortable truth is discovered: Deborah has been navigating life as a victim, using Kathy’s betrayal to justify her hostility towards the world. Deborah and Her Team are Determined to Get The Late-Night Spot in ‘Hacks’ Season 3 Close Deborah’s major success after her guest stint at Danny Collins’ late-night talk show makes her determined to become his replacement. The strategy of her stealthy campaign changes completely when she goes rogue by announcing her intentions during the Thanksgiving parade. The hilarious ensuing publicity campaign has her making a variety of partnerships – from being the image of Dunkin' Donuts to becoming a Sims character. Kayla and Jimmy are also thriving in their own managing company, but Deborah is still one of their toughest clients. They go to unexpected lengths to get her the late-night spot. The least crazy thing they do is pretend they know how to play pickleball while framing it as a chance encounter so they can meet with network executive Winnie Landell . On the other end, they stalk Larry Arbuckle in an attempt to get the rights for a Fatty Arbuckle biopic that’d get Deborah’s only competition for the late-night show out of the way. At some point, Marcus comes to terms with his diminished relevance, given Deborah’s resurgent popularity. He’s last seen considering taking another job while preparing a reluctant Damien to take his spot. Related Jean Smart's Hilarious Emmys Speech Flub Perfectly Sums Up Hollywood's Streaming Problem The 'Hacks' star made a hilarious and completely true point about the current state of TV. Posts The Third Season of ‘Hacks’ Ends with a Tense Power Struggle Spoiler alert: Deborah gets the job. At first, she offers Ava the head writer position. But wanting to make her show bulletproof, she backtracks and decides to make her second-in-command. Ava accepted this when she thought the network imposed the decision, but when she found out Deborah did this on her own and also lied about it, she went berserk. A heartbroken and enraged Ava confronts her and insists that the show doesn’t need to be protected, for they do their best work when working together. This scene highlights the complexity of their relationship and how far they’ve come – and is perhaps the best performance between Einbinder and Smart. But Ava had an ace under her sleeve. She had previously found out a very conflict-of-interest-y information – Deborah had slept with network chairman Bob Lipka . In the cathartic last minutes of Season 3, Ava does the unthinkable. She stoops to Deborah’s lows and blackmails her to secure the head writer position. The move is unexpected but earned. Throughout the show, they’ve both grown personally and professionally thanks to each other. But they’ve also learned from their flaws, and Ava makes it clear she’s willing to go to the same morally questionable lengths to get what she wants. The Season 3 finale of Hacks leaves Deborah and Ava as equals but at odds. There’s still a slight smirk in Deborah’s expression when they sit at their first meeting, so perhaps she was unconsciously hoping for something like this to happen. With Hacks returning for Season 4 on April 10, we’ll see where this new work dynamic takes them now.Your Rating close 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Rate Now 0/10 Your comment has not been saved Like Follow Followed Hacks TV-MA Comedy Drama 9 10 8/10 Release Date May 13, 2021 Network HBO Max Showrunner Lucia Aniello Directors Lucia Aniello Writers Lucia Aniello Cast See All
