NEMO 120 mm mortar executed MTSI and MRSI fire missions while on the move in what it calls a first-of-its-kind live-fire test.
Finnish company Patria showcased a new capability for its NEMO 120 mm turreted mortar during a live-fire test on April 13. The demonstration, shared on X, showed the system executing complex fire missions while the vehicle was still moving. This is being described as a first-of-its-kind event and comes at a time when modern battlefields are shaped by drones, rapid targeting cycles, and constant surveillance.
Firepower without stopping: The latest test moves beyond a routine product display. It shows how armored mortar systems are evolving to survive in high-threat environments. Traditionally, mortar units stop, fire, and then relocate. This sequence creates a window where enemy sensors can detect and target them.
Patria’s demonstration changes that model. The NEMO system fired accurately while on the move, reducing the time it stays exposed. This improves survivability and allows units to keep pace with advancing forces. In modern combat, where reaction times are short, this kind of mobility can be critical.
The system is designed not just for firepower but also for crew protection. Operators remain inside an armored vehicle to avoid exposure during firing. This aligns with the growing need for protected and mobile fire support in contested environments.

Understanding synchronized strike modes: The demonstration focused on two advanced firing techniques. These are Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact and Multiple Targets Simultaneous Impact.
Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact allows several rounds to be fired on different trajectories, hitting a single target at the same time. This reduces warning time and increases the shock effect on the target.
Multiple Targets Simultaneous Impact expands this concept. It enables the system to strike multiple targets nearly simultaneously. This is useful for engaging dispersed enemy positions in one coordinated action.
The firm said the NEMO can fire up to five rounds in these modes. The system can also distribute impacts across patterns such as circular, rectangular, or linear layouts. These features add flexibility during complex combat scenarios.
High-end mortar system design: From a technical perspective, NEMO sits at the top end of mobile mortar systems. The turret weighs about 4,190 pounds and offers full 360-degree rotation. It can range from minus 3 degrees to plus 85 degrees.
The system includes an autoloader with manual backup and uses advanced recoil management. It supports standard 120 mm mortar rounds and guided ammunition. The maximum range exceeds 6.2 miles, depending on the type of ammunition used.
Patria lists a time-to-fire of under 25 seconds. The system can fire up to 10 rounds per minute, with a sustained rate of six rounds per minute. It can also launch its first three rounds in just 15 seconds.
NEMO can be mounted on multiple platforms, including 6×6 and 8×8 vehicles, tracked carriers, and even naval vessels. This flexibility allows it to operate across different mission types and terrains.
Software-driven battlefield advantage: A key part of this capability lies in software. Patria links the achievement directly to a new fire-control system. This software enables accurate targeting, timing, and coordination even while the vehicle is moving.
Modern indirect fire depends on more than just the weapon itself. It requires integration with sensors, communication systems, and command networks. NEMO is designed to operate within these digital frameworks, enabling faster, more precise responses.
The ability to calculate trajectories, adjust for movement, and synchronize impacts in real time shows how software is shaping modern artillery. This approach turns the mortar system into a networked combat node rather than a standalone weapon.
