Court filing comes as Texas Tech says Brendan Sorsby checking into residential treatment program amid NCAA gambling investigation
CINCINNATI - Former University of Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit against him on Monday, the same day it was announced he is checking into a treatment facility for gambling addiction.
UC filed a lawsuit against Sorsby following his transfer, claiming he violated his NIL agreement when he did not pay $1 million in damages for transferring, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Texas Tech says Sorsby is checking into a residential treatment program for gambling addiction. College athletes are banned from betting on collegiate or professional sports. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Sorsby is at the center of an NCAA investigation.
In 2022, while Sorsby was redshirting for the Indiana Hoosiers, he bet on IU football, the ESPN insider said. Sorsby’s 2022 bets were for the Hoosiers to win, and no bets were made on a game in which he played, according to Thamel. : “Sorsby’s gambling has not drawn the attention of law enforcement, according to sources, nor has he been linked to anyone attempting to influence the outcome of a game.
Sorsby’s gambling, sources said, was a steady flurry of small bets over a period of time. ”Texas Tech released a statement saying it loves and supports Sorsby in his decision to seek professional help. Indiana University Athletics released a statement Monday saying it was made aware of a media report regarding a student-athlete who last competed for its football program in 2023. Indiana University has no further comment at this time.
Chris Tuell is the clinical director of addiction services at the Lindner Center of Hope and an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UC. He says sports betting is a growing crisis, especially among young adults.
“The research is clear — whenever someone has more accessibility to gambling, there’s a risk of problem gambling — and it can be so devastating,” Tuell said. Tuell says gambling triggers a dopamine response, making addiction easy to develop. He says it’s not surprising to see young athletes caught up in it.
“They may think — because I play the game, I know more about the game, I know about certain players — and that weighs into the factor,” Tuell said. Tuell says he’s been working with lawmakers to limit access to sports betting in Ohio.
“People who played sports, loved sports, had their teams, their favorite players — but because of gambling, all of that is gone now. They only care about winning, about the odds — and it totally disconnects them from the sport,” Tuell said. Sorsby was a highly sought-after player when he entered the transfer portal. He was the No. 1 ranked player in the portal by ESPN.
