The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game will conduct multiple prescribed burns at Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge in Fairbanks on May 10 and 11. The burns aim to reduce wildfire risk and enhance habitat for waterfowl and other species.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Multiple prescribed burns at Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge in Fairbanks are planned for May 10 and 11. The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game say it is conducting the burn to reduce the likelihood of any potential wildfires and enhance the waterfowl habitat.

They are expected to burn approximately 37 acres on the 2,500-acre refuge on the Echo Acres Drive fields off of Farmer’s Loop Road. “Prescribed fire mimics the results of naturally occurring wildfires in a more controlled setting, enhances soil quality, and promotes native plant diversity. Post-fire conditions benefit many species and create more nesting habitat for migratory birds and increased browse for our resident moose,” said Clint Cooper, Alaska Department of Fish and Game wildlife biologist and manager of the Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge.Anchorage police officer seeks long-term protective order against friend of missing Eagle River manAnchorage School Board votes to reverse cuts if state funding increasesASD School Board considers reversing cutsArrest made in 2021 homicide of 18-year-old found dead in Anchorage ballfield
