On Thursday, Pat Pitney, the president of the University of Alaska System (UA), gave the State of the University address at a Rotary Club Luncheon in Fairbanks. This was her last address as she will step out of her position in May.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - After six years of effort, the University of Alaska is no longer in a position of “survival” and can now focus on long-term success and investment into the future of the Alaska , according to Pat Pitney , the president of the University of Alaska System.

On Thursday, Pitney gave the State of the University address at a Rotary Club Luncheon in Fairbanks. This was her last address. She plans to step out of her position in May. “The University of Alaska is strong and positioned for long-term success,” Pitney said. For her final State of the University address, she highlighted growth and change in the UA system following “times of disruption,” such as the Covid-19 pandemic. “Stabilizing our system was my goal when I first walked into this role,” Pitney said. That stability has now been achieved, according to Pitney, due to “state funding stability” and “continued enrollment growth.” She highlighted how the last six years have brought in positive changes as the UA system addressed challenges such as “budget crises, funding uncertainties, declining enrollments for over a decade, a global pandemic that forced us online overnight.” Now, the UA system is seeing positive enrollment and continued enrollment growth, “an all-time high” in research funding at $273 million, and the possibility of being a selected for a National Science Foundation grant that would provide $160 million. These changes have also brought on new ambitions as UA works to position the system “as a beacon for Alaska and the U.S. on the international Arctic stage.” Part of that includes the Arctic Leaders Initiative, which launched last year. “This program equips students and early career faculty to be our future leaders with local, state, national, and international connections,” Pitney explained. “Those connections are vital for Alaska to seize its future in our increasingly global Arctic.” Now there are efforts to “establish a formal National Arctic Policy Center that will leverage and complement the work conducted in UAF’s many research and academic units and units throughout the university system,” Pitney said. Ending her address, Pitney highlighted how the university system went from a focus on survival to being position for long-term growth as she retires from the position of president. As the UA system moves forward, they search for new leadership both at the system level and for the University of Alaska Fairbanks. As the system turns toward the future they’ll also stay focused on state industries as discussions of an liquid natural gas pipeline continue and as mining of critical minerals sees advancement in the state.Sled dog dies on Iditarod trail en route to Elim checkpoint, officials sayMan who police say killed former father-in-law and tried to kill ex-wife found dead in woodsMountain View fire leaves more than half a dozen people without a home907 Sports: Madness of March with Iditarod and State Basketball Tournaments
