The Colorado Buffaloes men's basketball program has successfully expanded its recruiting reach to Australia , thanks in large part to the efforts of assistant coach Nate Tomlinson .
This strategic move taps into a growing pool of young Australian players who have already gained valuable experience competing in lower-level professional leagues. While bolstering the frontcourt was the primary focus during the offseason, the coaching staff recognized the need for additional depth and skill on the perimeter. Last week, the Buffs officially signed guard Alex Dickeson and forward Goc Malual, both of whom committed to head coach Tad Boyle last month.
Malual is anticipated to contend for playing time within a significantly revamped frontcourt, which will now include three key transfer additions: Noah Fedderson from North Dakota State, Justin Neely from UNC Greensboro, and David Gomez from Charlotte. Dickeson, on the other hand, will integrate into a backcourt led by returning point guard Barrington Hargress, alongside fellow guards Jalin Holland, Ian Inman, and Josiah Sanders, who will all be entering their second year with the program.
Coach Boyle highlighted the pivotal role played by Nate Tomlinson in securing the commitments of both Dickeson and Malual. Tomlinson’s Australian background and existing network within the Australian basketball community proved invaluable in establishing connections and building rapport with the recruits. Boyle explained that the timing aligned perfectly, with the team identifying a potential need for a guard midway through the year, and Dickeson expressing interest.
Dickeson had the opportunity to observe the Buffs in action during their exhibition tour of Australia last year, further solidifying his interest in the program. The coach emphasized a growing trend of young players from Europe and Australia seeking opportunities in the United States to advance their basketball careers. These players often arrive with a level of maturity and competitive experience that sets them apart from traditional freshmen.
Barrington Hargress is expected to remain the primary ball-handler, but his role may evolve with the departure of Isaiah Johnson to Texas. This could necessitate Hargress taking on a larger scoring responsibility, with Dickeson and Sanders emerging as potential candidates to share point guard duties. Hargress and Sanders were the only two Buffs to participate in all 33 games last season, with Sanders averaging 4.4 points per game.
Despite struggling with his three-point shooting (.125), Sanders demonstrated a strong rebounding presence, securing the second-most offensive rebounds on the team (36), and maintained an impressive assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.12. Coach Boyle stressed the importance of having at least three players capable of effectively running the point, and believes the team now possesses that depth with Hargress, Sanders, and Dickeson.
He praised Sanders’ ability to drive to the basket and his commitment to improving his jump shot, while highlighting Dickeson’s exceptional passing skills and versatility. Both Dickeson and Malual are considered more seasoned players due to their experience competing against older opponents, which Boyle believes will be a significant asset to the team
