Officials cut the ribbon on Stark County’s first dedicated motorcycle training site, located on Kent State University’s Stark County campus.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Officials cut the ribbon on Stark County’s first dedicated motorcycle training site, located on Kent State University’s Stark County campus. The new facility addresses a critical safety gap.
More than half a million Ohioans ride motorcycles, and last year, 78 percent of the riders killed on Ohio roads had never taken a safety course. Jim Kestel, a motorcycle instructor with more than 30 years of experience, said a basic safety course is fundamental for new riders.
“The importance for the new riders is getting started on the right foot,” Kestel said. “A lot of times friends will teach people how to ride and what they end up teaching them are their bad habits. ”“If I told you that I could increase your odds of survival on a bike by about 75 percent, I think you would take the course,” he said.
Before the new site opened, the nearest training facilities were in Summit, Medina and Portage counties. The course costs $75. Michele Piko with Motorcycle Ohio said the rest of the course is funded by motorcycle registration fees.
“We have over 500 thousand registered motorcycles in Ohio, and 6 dollars from that registration fee going directly to the rider education fund,” Piko said. “So this program is actually by motorcyclists, for motorcyclists,” he said. Courses are already underway and run through the end of September. Riders of all skill levels are encouraged to sign up.
