The family of a Florida State University student who died from injuries sustained in a fire back in November at the Social Seminole Apartments has filed a lawsuit against several defendants, including the owner of the apartment complex.
TALLAHASSEE , Fla. - The family of a Florida State University student who died from injuries sustained in a fire backThe lawsuit comes the same day WCTV learned that the cause of the massive fire that took place on November 19 at the off-campus student housingThe fire left one building severely damaged, many people injured and displaced more than 70 others.
In the press release from local law firm Morgan & Morgan, the attorneys claim that Harsoda’s family has joined “14 injured plaintiffs to file a lawsuit against several defendants, alleging their negligence contributed to the catastrophic blaze. ” John Morgan with Morgan & Morgan said the fire was preventable and their independent investigation uncovered a “litany of alleged failures and oversights.
” This comes after WCTV obtained a DFS case report that stated there was a lack of evidence to determine the fire’s cause. This building was a ticking time bomb. Our investigation has revealed a litany of alleged failures and oversights that led to a completely preventable catastrophe. A young man lost his life and more than a dozen other students have suffered life-altering injuries and trauma.
It’s unconscionable to subject anyone to such allegedly unsafe living conditions, and we will hold all of the defendants accountable for their alleged failures to protect the residents and guests at The Social Seminole Apartments. The lawsuit alleges that the fire broke out in Building F of the Social Seminole Apartments due to cosmetic damage in the front of the building that allowed people to discard rubbish and in this case, an item that started the fire.
They claim that a lack of functioning smoke detectors, fire safety equipment, fire alarms, poorly maintained fire extinguishers and windows sealed shut contributed to the building’s intense blaze. According to the complaint, a fire watch was issued to the property following a failed 2024 Tallahassee Fire Department inspection, but the security company contracted for the fire watch “did not conduct that fire watch according to Florida Fire Prevention Code standards.
