ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Artemis II crew returned safely to Earth today after a 10-day mission to the moon, marking the first time humans have traveled to lunar orbit in more than half a century.

“We did it. We sent amazing people to the moon and safely returned them to Earth for the first time in more than 50 years,” said Lori Glaze, acting associate administrator for NASA’s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate.

The crew of four splashed down off the coast of San Diego. At one point during the mission, the crew traveled farther from Earth than any human has ever been.

The mission launched from Florida on April 1. During their 10 days in space, the crew captured views never before seen by human eyes.Throughout the mission the crew were often described by NASA administrators as “poets.”Jessica Meir, aboard the International Space Station, radioed to the crew during the mission.

NASA officials said the successful return opens the door for future missions. “The path to the lunar surface is open, but the work ahead is greater than the work behind us,” said Amit Kshatriya, NASA associate administrator. “53 years ago, humanity left the moon. This time we return to stay.”
