First Female Band Director at Calhoun High School Reflects on Legacy

Lewis-Davis, the first and only female band director at Calhoun High School, discusses her groundbreaking career, her mother's legacy as the first female bus driver in Montgomery, and her impact on students through music. She reflects on her achievements, including award-winning bands, and the challenges of motivating today's youth. With Calhoun High School expanding to include seventh and eighth grades, she plans to stay involved in her students' lives.

She is the first and only female band director in the history of Calhoun High School , a historic school in Lowndes County. The school was one of the first designed specifically for Black students in the rural community of Letohatchee.

And Lewis-Davis was not the first in her family to break barriers. Her mother, Daisy Annette Lewis, was the first female bus driver in Montgomery.

“My mother, Daisy Annette Lewis, she’s the first female bus driver in Montgomery, Alabama,” Lewis-Davis said. “She drove for 17 years or more. ” Under Lewis-Davis’ leadership, Calhoun High School’s band has earned several awards. The school named the band room in her honor.

“I don’t believe in ‘can’t. ’ If someone says ‘can’t,’ I don’t like that word because everyone can do,” Lewis-Davis said. A Montgomery native, she graduated from Carver High School and Alabama State University with a music degree. She connects with students through songs, instruments and rhythm, encouraging many to continue playing in college.

With decades of experience, she said motivating today’s generation can be different than in the past.

“Old school parents, you made them do that. But now, if they don’t want to do it, they don’t push them to do it,” she said. With school closures and low enrollment in the area, Calhoun will add seventh and eighth grades next year. The school currently serves grades nine through 12.

Lewis-Davis said the changes mark a new era for the school and the right time for a new band director. She plans to keep an eye on her students from afar.

“I know I won’t sit down for good,” she said. “I’ll always be keeping a close eye on Calhoun and my former students. ”Suspect in White House correspondents’ dinner shooting was armed with multiple weaponsMonday marks 15 years since deadly April 27 tornado outbreak in Alabama
