Donovan Keontae Caldwell, 20, of Prattville, was arrested on a second-degree assault charge after a confrontation at the Walmart on Ann Street Tuesday morning. Caldwell is accused of hitting the victim, a loss prevention officer who was off-duty from his job as an Alabama State University police officer, multiple times in the face after being stopped on suspicion of shoplifting around 11:35 a.m.Donovan Keontae Caldwell, 20, of Prattville, was arrested after a confrontation at the Ann Street Walmart in which he’s accused of hitting the victim in the face multiple times as he was stopped for investigation of possible store theft.
Court filings state that Caldwell came into the store wearing a backpack. Before he left, store security notified the officer that Caldwell had put stolen items into the pack. The officer approached Caldwell and ordered him to stop, at which point the two “tussled” and “fell to the ground,” the affidavit explained. That’s when Caldwell reportedly hit the officer in the face multiple times.
Caldwell is being held on a $7,500 bond at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
