CINCINNATI - Cincinnati leaders are back to square one after their plan to open a $5.5 million homeless resource center in Queensgate fell through, forcing them to find a new location. The city was originally eyeing a building at 760 W.
Fifth St., also known as the Cincinnati Museum Center’s Geier Collections and Research Center.for unhoused folks during extreme weather. It would also provide access to mental and physical care, employment opportunities, government aid programs, and treatment for substance abuse. Although the plan to create the center is still in the works, the city announced Nov. 24 that the Queensgate location is no longer a “feasible” option. According to the city manager’s office, the Cincinnati Museum Center, who owns the building, will not be able to move out within the city’s planned timeframe for construction and grand opening. “From the initial conversations, the timing of a move was unlikely to sync up as we go through the design development and fundraising for our new collections facility at 1518 Dalton Avenue,” said Cody Hefner with the Cincinnati Museum Center. “We are still in the design and cost estimating process for our new location, which drives the timing for construction and moving. The impact and the long-term legacy of this project requires us to be thorough at every step.” Hefner says that there are 6 million artifacts and specimens being maintained at 760 W. Fifth St., therefore, it is important for the museum center to be “methodical” when moving the collections.“Though the site for the daytime one-stop center has not been selected, we are committed to moving forward with this valuable, permanent resource for our unhoused community. It will provide needed safe space for individuals while also connecting them with critical resources,” City Manager Sheryl Long said in a press release. The city is hoping to open the daytime center between winter 2027 and 2028, but the exact timeline is not known. Mollie Lair with the city manager’s office told FOX19 NOW that city leaders are still looking at a few alternate locations, Queensgate being one of the neighborhoods they are looking at. She did not name specific locations. In the meantime, temporary emergency shelters will be activated for anyone in need during extreme winter weather – when daytime temperatures are forecasted to reach 15 degrees or below or there’s substantial ice and snow. Normally, the Over-the-Rhine Rec Center is the designated center for extreme weather, but since it is under renovations, the St. Anthony Center at 1615 Republic St. is the temporary location for people to go.
