A long-standing barrier in optoelectronics has been addressed by researchers at the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory. They have invented a molecular “back door” to power materials previously considered useless for modern electronics.

In particular, the development centers on a technique to electrically power previously insulating nanoparticles, namely lanthanide-doped nanoparticles . It has led to the creation of a new class of light-emitting diodes called “LnLEDs,” which could advance medical diagnostics, super-fast optical communications, and highly sensitive chemical detectors.Powering nanoparticles for electronics LnNP materials are known for their ability to produce incredibly pure and stable light — especially in the second near-infrared range, which can penetrate biological tissues far deeper than visible light.The problem? They are electrically insulating. This has prevented the use of these nanoparticles in electronic devices like LEDs. “These nanoparticles are fantastic light emitters, but we couldn’t power them with electricity. It was a major barrier preventing their use in everyday technology,” said Professor Akshay Rao, who led the research at the Cavendish Laboratory. The Cambridge team’s solution was to create an organic-inorganic hybrid material to circumvent the insulating nature of the LnNPs. In this method, an organic dye is attached to the surface of the LnNPs. This molecule acts as the “antenna.”In the new LnLED design, electrical charges are injected directly into the 9-ACA molecules, bypassing the nanoparticle entirely.The 9-ACA molecules capture this energy and enter a high-energy triplet excited state .With an efficiency exceeding 98%, energy from the triplet state is transferred to the lanthanide ions in the nanoparticle, resulting in brilliant light emission.“We’ve essentially found a back door to power them. The organic molecules act like antennas, catching charge carriers and then ‘whispering’ it to the nanoparticle through a special triplet energy transfer process, which is surprisingly efficient,” noted Rao. Myriad applications The LnLEDs operate at a low voltage . It produces light with an exceptionally narrow spectral width, providing a level of purity and specificity higher than that of quantum dots and other rivals.“The purity of the light in the second near-infrared window emitted by our LnLEDs is a huge advantage,” said Dr Zhongzheng Yu, a lead author of the study and postdoctoral research associate at the Cavendish Laboratory. “For applications like biomedical sensing or optical communications, you want a very sharp, specific wavelength. Our devices achieve this effortlessly, something that is very difficult to do with other materials.”This unprecedented purity and electrical control unlock a wide range of applications. For instance, it can enable the creation of advanced medical devices, such as tiny, injectable, or wearable LnLEDs for deep-tissue imaging and activating drugs with pinpoint precision.The specific, narrow-spectrum light enables faster, clearer optical communication systems by allowing more data to be transmitted with less interference. This is not all. The purity of the light is ideal for creating highly sensitive detectors for specific chemical or biological markers.The team is optimistic, having already demonstrated a promising initial peak external quantum efficiency of over 0.6% for their first-generation NIR-II LEDs, with clear strategies for significant future improvements.The study was published in the journal Nature on November 19.
