Authorities in Moab, Utah, debunked a fake AI-generated image showing federal agents raiding a high school, which caused widespread panic in the community. Police confirmed the photo was fabricated after reviewing inconsistencies in the school's layout. Experts warn that realistic AI-generated content is making it harder to distinguish fact from fiction.

A photo circulating online that appears to show an ICE agent at a high school has been debunked by the Moab City Police Department. A fake image generated by artificial intelligence showing what appeared to be federal agents raiding a high school sparked widespread concern in Moab on Monday, authorities said.

Moab police said the fabricated photo, which spread rapidly throughout the community, appeared to show agents in tactical gear gathered outside Grand County High School. Within minutes, community members began sharing the image and calling authorities, worried an active situation was unfolding.

“It did,” Moab Police Chief Lex Bell said when asked whether the image caused panic. “Again, it’s Moab — it’s 5,000, 6,000 people here, and everybody knows everybody. It doesn’t take long for it to get around. So yeah, it caused quite a bit of concern immediately.

” Bell said police were first alerted around 2:30 p.m. by a school resource officer who reported the image spreading online.

“Our school resource officer called me and informed me that there was an AI-generated photo going around of potential federal agents at our high school conducting a raid,” Bell said. “They were in the front office where this photo was allegedly taken and assured me nothing of that nature had happened,” Bell said. Investigators reviewed the image and quickly determined it was generated using artificial intelligence. Bell said inconsistencies in the school’s layout were among the indicators.

“If you know the layout of that part of the front of the school, there are some things that don’t fit,” he said. Experts say increasingly realistic AI-generated images are making it harder to distinguish fact from fiction. Brandon Amacher, director of Utah Valley University’s Emerging Tech Policy Lab, said convincing fake content can now be created with relatively few resources.

“Now it doesn’t take massive amounts of resources to generate something that is very convincing and that could really sway the public narrative one way or another,” Amacher said. He advised the public to be cautious when viewing content online, especially if it triggers a strong emotional response. Police said they do not yet know who created the image and have no indication it was made by a student.

Bell said potential consequences for creating and sharing a fake image like this depend on intent and the outcome.

“It really does depend on what the results are and what does happen with what their intent was,” he said. “At this point, I don’t know that it’s caused enough to have risen to a criminal level. Obviously a terrible idea. ”“I think the school, were they to find out it was a student or somebody attending that school, are going to have some administrative penalties for that individual,” Bell said.

“I can almost guarantee that. ”A West Bountifulneighborhood was forced to evacuate as officials removed explosives found nearby.
