Chinese engineers have finalized the design for the country’s first 1,000-meter (3,280 feet) deep-diving tourist submersible.
Move over, space tourism. The next frontier for the wealthy isn’t looking up at space, but staring down into the “ Midnight Zone .”Chinese engineers have finalized the design for the country’s first tourist submersible that can go 1,000-meter deep in the ocean.
It’s a direct move to compete with the small Western companies that have long controlled the luxury diving market.According to the South China Morning Post, the China Ship Scientific Research Centre in Wuxi is accelerating its timeline to dominate deep-sea tourism. The center plans to complete a prototype of its 1,000-meter deep-diving submersible before the end of 2026, with the goal of launching full commercial operations by 2030. The submersible will be designed to carry up to four passengers per trip. Tickets for these “inner space” journeys can range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. It shows China’s intent to transition its world-class scientific diving technology into the high-end luxury travel market.Cracking the pressure codeBuilding a vehicle that can withstand 100 times the atmospheric pressure of the surface is an engineering nightmare. The most difficult piece of the puzzle? The window. But the research center team has already cracked the code by designing a transparent hull that balances structural integrity with a 360-degree view.It would allow tourists to safely witness the Midnight Zone. The Midnight Zone is the deep part of the ocean between 1,000 and 4,000 meters deep. It gets its name because it is completely dark, as no sunlight can reach these depths. With temperatures hovering at a steady 4°C , any organism — or submersible — venturing into this zone must be strong enough to handle both the extreme cold and the massive hydrostatic force of the deep.China already has dozens of tourist subs. However, they are puddle jumpers by comparison. Most only dive 20 meters — shallow enough for a lake, but not for the abyss. This new vessel borrows DNA from the Jiaolong and Deep Sea Warrior, the country’s record-breaking scientific deep-sea submersibles.Shadow of the TitanChina’s new submersible enters a specialized market currently led by Western brands like Triton and U-Boat Worx, which have operated at these depths for years.Experts believe there is a clear “niche” market for these deep-sea dives. But the project’s ultimate success will depend on two critical factors: competitive pricing and uncompromising safety standards. The industry still feels the ripples of the 2023 Titan tragedy. Hence, safety is of utmost importance. Despite high-profile tragedies like the Titan implosion and a recent fatal accident in the Red Sea, experts believe the “extreme” tourism market remains resilient. According to Adele Doran of Sheffield Hallam University, some travelers may be deterred by safety risks, but a “latent demand” for high-stakes adventure ensures that there will always be a pool of enthusiasts ready to replace them.Reportedly, the market potential for China’s deep-sea submersible appears strong, with numerous travel agencies and local tourism departments already expressing interest. While shallow-water dives currently cost around US$150, deep-sea expeditions command thousands of dollars per ticket. However, as industry experts emphasize, the project’s commercial viability hinges entirely on balancing these premium prices with passenger safety.

South Africa Imposes Hefty Tariffs on Chinese Steel Amid Dumping ConcernsSouth Africa's ITAC has levied substantial tariffs on Chinese steel after an investigation confirmed product dumping. This action aims to protect the domestic steel industry, facing difficulties due to cheaper imports, and will be in effect for up to five years. The move is significant given South Africa and China's membership in the BRICS economic bloc. Tariffs are also imposed on products from Japan and Taiwan, and follow previous actions against Thailand.
