Pregnant woman deals with cancer while doctors guard against heart issues, University Hospital receives recognition for multidisciplinary care
SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio - Baby Vivienne, now four months old, at home with her parents, Mia and Scott Pruzin. But a lump on Mia’s neck put all that in jeopardy with a diagnosis on June 12, twenty weeks into her pregnancy.
“I had cancer in multiple parts of my body and had Stage Three Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and needed to start chemotherapy almost immediately,” Mia remembered.Compounding the cancer diagnosis, one of the chemotherapy drugs, called The Red Devil, could damage Mia’s heart...as well as baby Vivienne’s. But the chemo couldn’t wait, according to Dr. Michael Zacharias, a cardiologist with University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. “For her it was quite serious; she needed urgent treatment despite the fact she was twenty weeks pregnant.” Dr. Zacharias remembered. “That came with the risk of heart issues which we needed to carefully watch for.” After twelve rounds of chemo, Mia gave birth for weeks early to Vivienne in October 2, who weighed in at 5 pounds, 13 ounces and measured 19 inches. The team at University Hospitals received recognition for this multidisciplinary care like Mia received, the treatment involving oncology cardio-oncology, and maternal fetal medicine. “We were awarded again, gold status of the International Society of Cario-Oncology,” Dr. Zacharias proudly related. “We were able to watch her ring the bell and that’s something special even we, even on the cardiology side, enjoy seeing our patients go through and achieve.” But the real achievement, according to the Dr. Zacharias and the Pruzins, is having a healthy mom and baby at home. “You never want to go through this type of situation, having cancer and being pregnant but, now being on the other side of it,” Mia said, “having the best reward ever, a healthy baby.”Bridal shop served as ‘hub’ for human trafficking, drug-dealing operations, prosecutors sayCuyahoga County Prosecutor fights reduced charge in firefighter’s death
