A childhood construction toy has been transformed into a working 8-bit mechanical computer that can perform real math.

K’NEX, the colorful plastic construction toy known for roller coasters and towers, has taken on a new identity. It has become the frame of a fully functioning 8-bit mechanical computer . Built by an inventor on YouTube known as Shadowman39, this is no ordinary model.

It doesn’t just look impressive. It actually does math.At the heart of this creation is an arithmetic logic unit . In computing, the ALU is the part of the processor that performs basic operations like addition. Shadowman39’s version, made entirely from K’NEX rods, connectors, and gears, is capable of processing numbers between 0 and 255—or -128 to 127 in signed binary mode. It stores values using mechanical registers. Each register is made of a row of levers, where the position of the lever represents a binary 1 or 0.To use the machine, you manually set the levers to represent two input numbers. Then, a rack-and-pinion drive system powers the calculation. Slowly, piece by piece, the machine pushes through the math and reveals the final result. Each click and clack of the parts reflects a step in the operation. Unlike electronic devices, this one shows every part of the process in plain sight.Engineering logic with plastic rodsBuilding this kind of machine out of plastic is a serious challenge. K’NEX was never meant for high-precision engineering. The pieces flex and bend, and joints can loosen over time. That’s part of the reason why few people attempt such complex builds. But Shadowman39 found a way to make it work.The mechanical ALU mimics how early computers used logic gates. Each bit of the calculation is handled by a network of levers and gears carefully designed to reproduce binary addition. The same rack-and-pinion system that normally makes toy cars move is here used to power the sequence of operations. One by one, digits are processed and added correctly.The result is both nostalgic and brilliant. It brings together the joy of childhood play and the complexity of real computation. The design has a lot in common with 19th-century mechanical calculators, which also used gears and moving parts to solve math problems. But instead of brass and steel, this one is made from plastic.From Skeeball to ALU: pushing K’NEX to its limitsThis isn’t the first time Shadowman39 has gone above and beyond with K’NEX. One of his earlier projects was a life-sized, working Skeeball machine. It included a coin slot that accepted quarters and a motorized scoreboard to keep track of the score. That project took over a year to complete, used more than 10,000 pieces, and stretched over 85 inches in length.That same attention to detail shows up in this mechanical computer. With so many moving parts, alignment is critical. If even one lever is off, the machine won’t give a correct result. Shadowman39 had to keep refining the design until it worked consistently.What makes this project special is not speed. Compared to modern electronics, the K’NEX computer is extremely slow. But every step is visible. You don’t need to imagine what’s happening inside the processor. You can watch it. That makes it a great learning tool—and a meditation on how computation works at its core.
