Brunswick Hills police chief urges voters to renew five-year levy

Brunswick Hills Police Chief Tim Sopkovich has one message for voters this May, the five-year police levy on the ballot that keeps his department running.

“The main purpose of it is to keep officers on the job...make sure that we can put fuel in the vehicles, maintain our equipment, and keep our officers on the road responding to those calls,” Sopkovich said. The levy brings in $845,000 a year. It keeps 15 full-time officers, one detective, a K-9 unit and a school resource officer on the job.

“We’ve been able to come in under budget. A lot of those funds we were able to carry over, that’s when we get our needed equipment upgrades,” Sopkovich said.

“I think the police do an excellent job,” Farr said.

“I am recently retired. I am now on a fixed income. I think the voters have to be very cautious and very selective about saying yes or no,” Farr said. The chief says this community of more than 11,000 people is being served by just 15 officers. By national standards, that is not enough.

“Keep our officers on the road responding to those calls,” Sopkovich said. Voters have renewed this levy twice over the last 10 years, and now they are being asked to do it again.
