In a video titled, “I am done...The Next Chapter,” Holloway made the announcement that most anticipated. The former UFC featherweight champion is moving up to lightweight permanently.
The move up was expected considering Holloway’s path to another title shot at 145 pounds is far more cloudy than a run at the lightweight title. Holloway has a combined 0-4 record against the champion Topuria and the No. 1 contender, Alexander Volkanovski.Holloway has fought at lightweight five times in his professional MMA career. In fact, he began his pro MMA career in 2010 where he won a championship with the X1 promotion at lightweight.
Holloway’s next fight at lightweight came in April at UFC 300 when he scored one of the greatest knockouts in MMA history with a last-second finish of Justin Gaethje. In total, Holloway has a 4-1 record at lightweight, but he’s 1-1 against top-level competition at 155 pounds. The only fighters ahead of him are Islam Makhachev, who is the current champion, the No. 1 contender Arman Tsarukyan who is expected to get his title shot in January. No. 2 is Charles Oliveira and he fights No. 7 Michael Chandler on Nov, 16 in the co-main event of UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden. No. 3 is Gaethje and No. 4 is Poirier, who is seemingly looking for a retirement fight.
