Birding enthusiasts have traveled across the country to see the spring migration of warblers at Maumee Bay State Park, but with gas prices continuing to soar, trips like that are far from cheap.
OREGON, Ohio - Birding enthusiasts have traveled across the country to see the spring migration of warblers at Maumee Bay State Park , but with gas prices continuing to soar, trips like that are far from cheap.
Jane Leff is part of a 17-person group who traveled from Ithaca, New York. That’s about 440 miles from Maumee Bay State Park. The highest price for gas she has seen on this trip is $4.94 in Port Clinton, where the group is currently staying.
“This is a plan that’s been six months in the making and the prices have gone up so horribly that it’s, I’m wondering if it’s even going to cover their costs,” Leff said. Leff said the group also considered the idea of taking a bus for the journey. The estimate for that is $300 per person, double what the group anticipated to pay in gas.
“I drive a hybrid, but he has an electric, so we’ve been trying to drive that as much as we possibly can,” Agsten said. The Worcester couple made the switch to electric vehicles four years ago because of Owens’ long commute to work. He realized how much money they were burning through by paying for gas.
“With the cost of electricity, even with the cost of the car, we came out ahead and now the gas is $5 a gallon. We’re really coming out ahead,” Owens said. Since the prices have started climbing, Agsten has prioritized walking to work. She has not filled up her car since gas went up over $5.
“It’s a hybrid, so it’s a pretty small tank, but I’m not looking forward to it. Usually only costs about 20 bucks to fill up. Now I’m expecting it to be around 50,” Agsten said. The couple said if they had pure gas cars, they would have been a little more mindful with their money on this trip.
“We probably would have packed our lunches and not bought any souvenirs or anything like that, just to have the gas money instead,” Agsten said.
