Farm closes six days a week in April to care for newborn reindeer, Highland cow and other animals.

BUTTE, Alaska - April marks the start of baby season at the Reindeer Farm in Butte, and the newborns are arriving faster than usual this year. The farm welcomed its first reindeer baby on April 1, and they have been coming one right after the other since then.

As of Monday morning, eight reindeer calves have been born this season. The farm expects between 30 to 50 reindeer births in an average year and had 40 last year. This year, staff hopes to welcome 50. “Usually we have one baby reindeer, and then we have a gap for about a week, and then the rest of the babies will come,” said Lauren Waite, a staff member at the farm. “This year, though, they’ve been coming really fast, one right after the other.” The work is demanding for farm staff, who sometimes need to bottle-raise newborns when mothers struggle to care for them. “Especially the first-time moms don’t always take good care of the babies, and then we have to bottle raise them,” Waite said. “And so, they’ll come in the house, and that means feeding them every two hours even through the night, just like a human baby. And so, they’re a lot of work, and we get really sleep deprived.” It’s not just reindeer on the farm this season. Staff are also bottle-raising Fergus, a 15-day-old Highland cow, who arrived at the farm just days after birth when his mother struggled to feed him. He weighed 64 pounds the day he was born. “You just have that extra connection with them,” Waite said. “They suck on your fingers, they run to you when they see you, and they really bond with you and remember you, and so I love having that connection with them.”To prioritize the health of the newborns, the farm is closed six days a week for the entire month of April. It remains open on Saturdays for tours. “There’s lots of us around that can help with the babies because it takes a lot of people,” Waite said. The farm will host its second annual Baby Farm Day event on April 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Last year, the farm sold around 1,200 tickets for the event. Tickets can be purchased online.5 rescued from grounded vessel in AleutiansResidents move in: City opens tiny homes to treat addiction among those experiencing homelessness
