Misty Rehder, 35, is due in Palmer Superior Court on May 6 after a grand jury indicted her on 24 animal cruelty counts.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A Palmer grand jury has indicted a Willow woman on 24 counts of animal cruelty in a case that drew outrage across Alaska after authorities found 23 dead dogs on a Mat-Su property last month.

The Alaska Department of Law said Monday that grand jurors returned true bills against 35-year-old Misty Rehder and that she is scheduled to be arraigned in Palmer Superior Court on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The indictment marks the next step in a case that began when Alaska State Troopers said they were asked on April 15 to assist Mat-Su Borough Animal Control with anat a property in the Caswell Lakes area between Willow and Talkeetna. Troopers said they found 25 dead dogs there and opened a criminal animal cruelty investigation.

Later,Rehder was arrested April 21 and initially charged by complaint with 26 counts of animal cruelty. At an arraignment the following day, a judge said each count alleged in the complaint was a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $50,000 fine. Court documents alleged the investigation began after an emaciated dog identified as Woody was brought to Tier 1 Veterinary Center.

The man who brought the dog in told investigators he went to the property after receiving a text message with a photo showing the dog appeared extremely thin, and said he then saw other dogs that appeared dead in outdoor kennels. In Monday’s release, the Department of Law said the Palmer District Attorney’s Office has received numerous emails from people in and outside Alaska about the case.

The department said charging decisions are made individually after reviewing the available evidence and applicable law and only when prosecutors believe a charge can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt. Under that standard, the department said, only Rehder has been charged.
