Jennifer Smith , the all-time wins leader as head women’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University , is leaving after 18 seasons to take over the program at Millersville University , her alma mater. “This is the only place I would’ve left for,” Smith said.
Returning to her alma materSmith played for the Marauders from 1998 to 2002 under then-head coach Mary Fleig. “I knew in fifth grade that I wanted to be a college basketball coach. So, one of the reasons I came to Millersville was to have a female head coach,” Smith said.
Building a culture of toughnessAn Eastern York graduate, Smith said she strives to build a program with a strong culture based on toughness and selflessness. “You play for the name on the front, not the back,” she said.
PSAC experience seen as an advantageSmith also believes her experience in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference as both a player and coach will help her transition into her new role. “I think it definitely does help in getting things going, maybe a little quicker than some other coaches that might be coming in from D-II schools from around the country,” Smith said.
Chasing a storybook finishAlthough Smith has yet to cut down the nets after winning a championship during her career, she said achieving that milestone at Millersville would be especially meaningful. “I’m just hoping for a storybook ending. It would mean everything,” Smith said.
