Zodiac Killer's Code Cracked? New Evidence Links Serial Killer to Black Dahlia Murder

Independent investigator claims to have decoded a Zodiac Killer cipher, revealing a potential connection to the 1947 murder of Elizabeth Short, also known as the Black Dahlia, and identifying Marvin Margolis as a prime suspect.

A new investigation suggests a startling link between the Zodiac Killer and the infamous Black Dahlia murder of Elizabeth Short in 1947. Alex Baber, a co-founder of Cold Case Consultants of America, claims to have cracked a decades-old cipher – the Zodiac’s ‘Z13’ – revealing the name ‘Marvin Merrill,’ an alias for Marvin Margolis .

Margolis, according to Baber, dated Short and was previously considered a suspect in her brutal murder. This discovery prompted the LAPD to seek DNA from a suspect’s family, a first in the Black Dahlia case. Baber utilized a combination of artificial intelligence and his own cryptographic expertise, focusing on a 2x7 grid transposition and substitution method, to decode the message. The key to the cipher, he asserts, was the victim’s first name, Elizabeth.

Further investigation led Baber to Margolis’s son, who reportedly displayed a strong physical reaction upon hearing of the connection between his father and the Zodiac Killer. The son provided handwriting samples that Baber believes exhibit striking similarities to both Margolis’s and the Zodiac’s writing styles, including shared phonetic spelling errors. Even more compelling, the son presented a sketch drawn by Margolis 46 years after Short’s death, depicting Elizabeth Short.

Baber claims this sketch contains hidden details mirroring injuries sustained by Short and a subtle impression of the word ‘Zodiac’ within the artwork. Margolis’s wartime connection to cryptography through his roommate, Bill Robinson, a WWII codebreaker handpicked by General MacArthur, adds another layer to the potential link. Police records from 1951 confirm Margolis was among 22 persons of interest in the Black Dahlia case.

Baber’s findings have been shared with the FBI and peer-reviewed by cryptography experts, including a former NSA codebreaker, who independently verified the decryption method. While the Los Angeles Police Department and the FBI have not yet issued official comments, the investigation has generated significant attention. Criminal profiler John Kelly, after reviewing Baber’s materials, believes the findings are credible and warrant further scrutiny.

The potential connection between these two notorious unsolved cases represents a significant development in true crime history, potentially bringing closure to decades-old mysteries. The investigation highlights the power of modern forensic techniques, including AI and advanced cryptography, in revisiting cold cases and uncovering new leads. The emotional reaction of Margolis’s son and the haunting details within the sketch further strengthen the case for a deeper examination of Margolis’s involvement in both the Black Dahlia murder and the Zodiac killings
