Orlando City made MLS history by overcoming a 3-0 deficit to defeat Inter Miami 4-3, with Martin Ojeda scoring a hat-trick and Tyrese Spicer netting the stoppage-time winner. Despite Lionel Messi's goal and two assists, Inter Miami suffered their first loss at their new stadium, leaving them without a home win this season. Meanwhile, other MLS teams secured wins and draws in a night of dramatic action.
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami had a commanding 3-0 lead over Orlando City and seemed poised to secure their first historic victory in their new stadium.
However, the script flipped dramatically as Orlando City staged an incredible comeback. Argentine forward Martin Ojeda scored a hat-trick, and Tyrese Spicer netted the winning goal in the third minute of stoppage time, securing a stunning 4-3 victory for Orlando City. This marked only the third time in MLS history that a team has overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a match. The MLS website boldly questioned, 'The greatest comeback in MLS HISTORY?
'—a claim Orlando City would undoubtedly affirm. Messi, making his 100th appearance for the club, contributed a goal and two assists, yet it wasn’t enough to prevent the upset against a team languishing near the bottom of the MLS standings. Inter Miami’s record at their new stadium dropped to 0-1-3, making them one of only three MLS teams still without a home win this season.
Ian Fray and Venezuelan defender Telasco Segovia also found the net for Inter Miami, who had been unbeaten in their last 11 matches across all competitions and their last nine MLS games. After the match, Fray revealed that Messi addressed the team in the locker room, calling the result 'unacceptable.
' 'We all agree with him. It’s unacceptable,' Fray stated. Orlando City, with a record of 3-7-1, had won just two of their last 15 MLS matches, including playoffs, dating back to last season. They had also failed to secure a single away win in the MLS this season before this remarkable turnaround.
None of that mattered on this night. Ojeda struck in the 39th minute to cut the deficit to 3-1 at halftime. He scored again in the 68th minute, reigniting Orlando’s hopes. Too much hope, from Inter Miami’s perspective.
Ojeda had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 73rd minute, but Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair made a crucial save to keep the score at 3-2. Undeterred, Ojeda converted a penalty in the 78th minute to level the match at 3-3. He nearly scored again in the 80th minute, but St. Clair, this time using his face, made another miraculous stop to preserve the tie.
Spicer ultimately sealed the victory for Orlando with his stoppage-time winner, leaving Messi and Inter Miami frustrated by what they perceived as uncalled fouls. Inter Miami has four matches left before the MLS takes a seven-week break for the FIFA World Cup. None of their upcoming opponents—Toronto, Cincinnati, Portland, or Philadelphia—had a winning record as of Saturday.
Elsewhere in MLS action, Ryan Hollingshead scored his first goal of the season in the 14th minute of stoppage time, and Denis Bouanga added another as Los Angeles FC drew 2-2 with San Diego FC. Reid Roberts made a spectacular overhead kick save to deny Dániel Sallói, helping San Jose Earthquakes secure a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC and remain unbeaten on the road.
Dejan Joveljić canceled out Paul Rothrock’s early goal for Seattle, earning Sporting Kansas City a 1-1 draw with the Sounders. Teenager Zavier Gozo and Diego Luna scored first-half goals, while Rafael Cabral kept a clean sheet as Real Salt Lake defeated Portland Timbers 2-0. Petar Musa netted his 10th goal of the season, Samuel Sarver scored his first MLS career goal, and FC Dallas ended a four-match winless streak with a 2-0 victory over New York Red Bulls.
Carles Gil scored a stoppage-time penalty to give New England Revolution a 1-0 win over Charlotte FC, extending their unbeaten run to six matches. Philadelphia Union’s Andre Blake faced off against rookie goalkeeper Brian Schwake in a goalless draw with Nashville SC. Kelvin Yeboah scored twice, Anthony Markanich added a goal and an assist, and Minnesota United came from two goals down to beat Columbus Crew 3-2. Saba Lobjanidze scored in each half as Atlanta United overcame CF Montreal 3-1.
Evander Da Silva Ferreira scored a hat-trick, his first in MLS, and Roman Celentano made eight saves to help FC Cincinnati edge Chicago Fire 3-2. Lawrence Ennali scored his third goal of the season, Jonathan Bond made two saves, and Houston Dynamo defeated Colorado Rapids 1-0. Mathias Laborda’s 82nd-minute goal earned Vancouver Whitecaps a 1-1 draw with LA Galaxy
