A rise in trading volume for the TRUMP token coincides with concerning market signals, suggesting a potential price correction.
Trump's perpetual futures open interest surged by 6% over a 24-hour period. The TRUMP/USDT pair dominated trading activity on Binance, the leading cryptocurrency exchange, accounting for 13.3% of the total exchange volume in the past 24 hours. While this surge in trading activity is undoubtedly exciting, investors and traders eyeing the market ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration should proceed with caution.
A key derivatives market indicator, however, presents a divergent signal from the rising futures open interest. Specifically, the perpetual futures cumulative volume delta, which gauges the disparity between buying and selling volume, has declined by over 1%. This indicates a relative increase in selling pressure, suggesting that traders are either taking short positions or bearish bets, or closing out their long positions. Furthermore, the TRUMP market appears overheated, with long holders facing an annualized funding fee exceeding 170% to shorts to maintain their positions. If the market's upward momentum falters, holding long positions will become financially burdensome, potentially triggering a mass unwinding of bullish bets. This could, in turn, result in a more pronounced price decline. The market data reveals that most major cryptocurrencies have witnessed a net selling pressure in perpetual futures over the past 24 hours. This could stem from market participants anticipating widespread price losses, engaging in a classic 'sell the fact' scenario following Trump's inauguration.
