California-headquartered Antares now enters the final phase before its microreactor before the DOE approves startup of the pilot facility.

US nuclear startup Antares has received a Documented Safety Analysis for its Mark0 demonstrator facility from the Department of Energy , marking a major milestone before attaining startup approval for its reactor.

The company aims to achieve criticality for its reactor before the 4th of July this year. With the increase in renewable energy projects, countries are also realizing the limitations of these power plants due to the intermittency of power supplied by them. To meet power requirements without emissions, countries are willing to return to nuclear fission. Given the challenges of building and maintaining large nuclear power plants, companies are now working to deploy small modular reactors and microreactors that can be built at scale and deployed more easily. California-headquartered Antares is developing microreactors and deploying its Mark0 demonstrator, a major step in its journey. Mark0 demonstration reactorFollowing the Documented Safety Analysis, Antares can begin the Readiness Review Process, the final phase before the DOE approves the reactor’s startup. “We are entering the final innings, and that’s incredibly exciting,” said Jordan Bramble, CEO and founder of Antares in a press release. “We developed this timeline in 2023, and we have hit every milestone since. This is a clear sign that we are proving our safety basis every step of the way, and I’m proud of the way this team has cleared key checkpoints, on schedule, again and again.”During the Mark0 demonstration, Antares will validate the reactor physics, neutronics models, and the instrumentation and control system. Fuel for the company’s reactors is being supplied by BWX Technologies, which will supply High Assay, Low Enriched Uranium fuel secured through DOE’s allocation. What happens next? Following the Mark0 demonstration, Antares will use the same facility for its Mark1 demonstration next year, where it will also attempt to generate electricity using its microreactor. “Getting here was only possible with strong support from our partners at Idaho National Laboratory and BWXT, and leadership at DOE, along with relentless work from the Antares team,” added Bramble in the press release. Antares has also added that it is on schedule to achieve criticality of its reactor before the 4th of July this year. The DOE aims to achieve criticality of at least three advanced nuclear reactors before Independence Day this year as part of its Reactor Pilot Program. The aim of the program is to accelerate commercial nuclear deployment in the country and is targeting 400 GW of nuclear energy generation capacity by 2050. “The Department of Energy is pleased to see Antares reach this important milestone,” said Rian Bahran, the DOE’s Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy for Nuclear Reactors. “We remain committed to working with innovative companies like Antares to reach the president’s ambitious goal of ensuring at least three reactors reach criticality before July 4, 2026.”Arantes’ progress in this direction is a good sign for the Reactor Pilot Program, while the company also aims to begin servicing defense and space applications with its carbon-free nuclear energy starting in 2028.
