Family-organized search party discovers dismembered, burned body on White Oak Church Road
EUFAULA, Ala. - Authorities are working to identify charred remains discovered by a family-organized search party looking for a missing 18-year-old. Mark Rumph Jr. was last seen getting into a black Nissan last Thursday.
Eufaula police began investigating his disappearance when he was reported missing on May 7, but his family organized a search party that made a tragic discovery.
“It wasn’t even a body there, it wasn’t even a body to be found. Literally when you looked at it, they had dismembered this young man, set his body on fire,” said Eliza Fredrick, a member of the search party.
A 12-person search party was organized by family members of the missing teen, but police are not yet able to confirm if the remains belong to Mark Rumph Jr. “The remains that we found we cannot positively ID, so it’s not been positively ID’d yet due to the fact that the body was dismembered and burnt,” said Danny Christ with Eufaula police. The search party spent two hours on White Oak Church Road in Eufaula, using ATVs, drones and a hound dog to search the area.
“If you think about the worst horror movie you’ve ever seen, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, that’s what this road is,” Fredrick said. Eufaula police responded to the scene shortly after the discovery before closing it off and beginning the investigation.
“The brother saw the body, the mother saw the body, the father saw the body. I don’t know if I’ll ever be the same,” Fredrick said.
“Like I said, as a father, I can’t say I wouldn’t have done the same thing with family members, but on our side we still have to do things legally and we have to follow our process and procedures, and that’s what we’re doing,” Christ said. Eufaula police are leading the investigation with help from the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation.
“We do have suspects, and my message to them is if you did this or had anything to do with it, this sick horrific crime, we’re coming for you. We’re going to find you,” Christ said. Members of the search party said there was evidence of blood and burn piles outside a nearby home. Eufaula police are utilizing cadaver dogs and fire marshals to aid in the investigation.
