) - The Alabama Supreme Court Friday dismissed most of the claims in one lawsuit alleging the University of Alabama Birmingham stole the organs of an inmate. In the opinion of the court, most of the claims were filed after the statute of limitations had expired in the case of Charles Singleton , who died in 2021.

Singleton died Nov. 21, 2021 at Regional One Health in Memphis, Tennessee where he was receiving medical treatment. Prior to being transferred to the hospital, Singleton was in the custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections at the Hamilton Aged and Infirmed Center in Marion County, Alabama. The ruling ordered the judge to dismiss all but one of the claims in the Singleton lawsuit – one that alleges violation of the Alabama Uniform Anatomical Gift Act . WBRC has reached out to attorneys for Singleton’s family, as well as UAB.
