The two separate deadly shootings happened only six days apart.
to 47 years to life in prison with the possibility of parole for two counts of murder and one count of felonious assault.Thomas’s family wrote letters to Judge Wagner asking for the maximum possible sentence.
Both victims’ families were in court for Blanchard’s sentencing too. There are no words that can truly capture the pain my family and I continue to feel, but I want to share with you who Treasure was beyond this tragedy. She was deeply loved by everyone who knew her. Treasure had a light about her that could brighten any room she walked into. She was full of life-- always smiling, always bringing energy, laughter, and warmth wherever she went. She had dreams, goals, and future she was working toward, and it is devastating knowing that all of that was taken away. She wasn’t just a victim-- she was a daughter, a cousin, a friend, and a beautiful soul who meant so much to so many people. Our family will never be the same without her. The silence she left behind is loud, and the pain is something we carry with us every single day. I will never be the same again. Ever. She was my entire life and he took that from me. My family will never be able to see her, love on her, or even call her. To make matters even worse, he killed a minor 6 days before. He is no longer fit to live amongst civilized people. He should never see the outside world again. My family and the other family deserve justice at the highest level. A beautiful soul was taken for no reason. Both victims’ families were in court for Blanchard’s sentencing too. A representative for Cornelious’s family spoke on their behalf. “He was supposed to do everything that he wanted-- he was good with cars, good with his hands, he was intelligent,” he said about the teen, who was a student at Hughes STEM High School.Malik Blanchard has had a violent history since 2015, based on his juvenile records. As a minor, he was adjudicated several times for various crimes, including aggravated menacing, robbery, and disorderly conduct. In May 2018, he was sentenced to spend seven years at the Ohio Department of Youth Services for aggravated robbery. While there, he had over 40 behavioral incident reports, an administrator previously told the court. “The administrator told the trial court about Blanchard’s ‘assault on another youth, sexual misconduct involving a fellow corrections officer, and refusal to enter his room requiring force,’” the memorandum says. Blanchard was also believed to be involved in gang activity at the time, the administrator testified in court. “‘The defendant was found to possess a letter related to gang activity. Upon being caught, defendant attempted to destroy the letter. After it was recovered, staff found the letter to contain detailed plans for gang hits, assaults, and a massive riot,’” the memorandum states. In August 2018, Blanchard was transferred to the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections to complete the rest of his sentence. On June 3, Malik Blanchard and a female friend went to a home on Percy Avenue in Westwood to visit with friends. Prosecutors say Blanchard pulled out a firearm with a flashlight attachment after an argument ensued with another nearby residence. Multiple people fled the area out of fear. Jay’Shawn Cornelious, 17, and another boy ran back to the home on Percy Avenue. Two of the bullets hit Cornelious, causing his death, court documents say. On June 9, Blanchard visited that same female friend at her apartment complex on Westwood Northern Boulevard. Surveillance footage shows Blanchard getting into a physical fight with several unknown individuals at 2:50 a.m. Prosecutors say he eventually escaped the fight, went to his female friend’s apartment, and grabbed a .22 cal scoped rifle. Hearing the commotion in the hallway, Treasure Thomas’s boyfriend opens the door and sees Blanchard walk by holding a rifle. As he tried to close the apartment door, prosecutors say Blanchard forced his way in, and opened fire. Four bullets from the rifle fatally hit Thomas, who was lying on a bed in the living room. Her boyfriend was also shot, but survived. Blanchard’s defense attorney argued in court that he was jumped before the shooting happened and did not know Thomas was in the apartment unit at the time. “By no way are we saying that is an excuse, but given his history of trauma and how he responds to situations, that is what he chose to do and he is taking full responsibility for that,” the defense said.
