Johnson softball beats Madison to inch closer to district title

The Jaguars look to keep the momentum going after they beat Madison 4-0 and hold a two-game lead in District 27-6A with three games remaining.

As Johnson closes in on its second district championship in three years, coach Christina Wollard reminded her players the season is not finished after the Jaguars posted a 4-0 victory against Madison on Tuesday.

Johnson improved to 10-1 in District 27-6A to maintain a two-game lead with three remaining. Churchill is 8-3, followed by Reagan , Clark and Madison . “We can’t take anything off,” junior shortstop Emily Kaman said. “We’ve got to pick each other up if we’re not producing. We’ve got to help each other because some nights might be hotter than others. We have to have confidence in each other that we will produce and help each other out.” NEWSLETTER: Your free all-access pass to the best high school sports coverage in San Antonio Johnson senior pitcher Maleena Moreno recorded 13 strikeouts and had a run-scoring double in the first inning to stake the Jaguars to a 2-0 lead. Kaman scored the first run after drawing a walk and stealing second. She scored on Cadance Lagasse’s single to left field. Moreno drove in Aryana Dunkelberger on a double to right field for the other first-inning run. That’s the type of game Kaman — who had two steals, walked twice and reached on an error — likes to play. “When I start off like that, it creates big energy, and it gets us going in the game,” Kaman said. “It helps us find ourselves, and when we’re able to create chaos, it helps us generate that energy to keep going and keep hitting balls in the gaps and just continuing that energy in the rally.” The Jaguars added two more in the third inning on Kylie Campbell’s single that scored two after Addison Navarijo and Mackenzie Morgan reached on two-out errors. Campbell laced an 0-2 single to left field, battling back after swinging and missing twice. “For me, a lot of it was trusting myself and realizing that stuff is going to happen,” Campbell said. “If I strike out, then I strike out. Everybody does it. No one thinks you’re perfect. So just not putting a lot of pressure on myself causes me to really be able to get out of my head and just have fun and swing.” Moreno said success with her change-up set up her complete-game shutout. She allowed four hits with the first two coming in the infield in the first and third innings. Madison didn’t get a ball to leave the infield until Mia Zamora’s single to left field in the fifth inning. Only two other balls left the infield — Dunkelberger’s putout at centerfield and Esabella Linnartz’s single to the outfield in the sixth. Also in the sixth, Kaman ranged over to the third-base fence to snag Tori Gonzales’ fly. “It was definitely keeping them off their toes,” Moreno said of her change-up, “and I trust my defense. I trust my shortstop, Emily, who is always really consistent and even got that crazy play. That was amazing and just knowing I can trust all my defense really helped me.” The Jaguars have won five in a row since dropping their only district contest, an 8-4 defeat against Churchill on March 21. Since then, the Jaguars have won three of five games via the run rule. Johnson faces Churchill again on April 16. “We were going to through this struggling time, and losing to Churchill, that brought us back into the right mindset,” Moreno said. “I feel as a team, we started to coast by, and that loss started to really push us into forming back into the team that we can be.”
