A bride's long-awaited wedding was dramatically disrupted when her sister-in-law threw a pot of black paint at her, stemming from a bitter family feud. Despite the shocking incident, the bride persevered and married her sweetheart.
The wedding day of Gemma Monk, a 35-year-old mother of two from Herne Bay, Kent , took a dramatic and unexpected turn when her sister-in-law, Antonia Eastwood, 49, threw a pot of black paint at her.
The incident, which occurred at Oakwood House register office in Maidstone, left Gemma covered in paint and her £1,800 wedding dress ruined. This act of sabotage was the culmination of a long-standing and bitter family feud. Despite the shocking disruption, Gemma, displaying remarkable resilience, managed to clean herself up and, with a borrowed dress, proceeded with the ceremony just two hours later, marrying her childhood sweetheart, Ken.
The roots of the conflict run deep, stemming from a previous incident where Gemma allegedly attempted to sabotage Antonia’s wedding by trying to trip her as she walked down the aisle – a claim Gemma dismisses as untrue. Antonia claims she felt justified in her actions, believing Gemma had deliberately tried to ruin her special day.
On the day of Gemma’s wedding, Antonia and her husband, Ashley (Gemma’s brother), were not invited but attended anyway, with Antonia intending to confront Gemma. The paint, she claims, was in the car from a recent handprint and footprint activity with her newborn granddaughter. The confrontation escalated quickly, resulting in a chaotic scene involving punches, hair-pulling, and even a car crashing into a brick wall after the father of the bride attempted to intervene.
While Antonia expressed shame for the notoriety the incident has brought upon herself and admitted to a panic attack during sentencing, she showed little remorse for her actions towards Gemma. She described the paint-throwing as a ‘spur of the moment’ reaction, despite the underlying tension and history between the two women. Gemma, however, remained determined to marry Ken, stating that nothing would stop her, even if it meant walking down the aisle in her underwear covered in paint.
The case, heard at Maidstone Crown Court, resulted in Antonia narrowly avoiding jail time for criminal damage. The incident has been widely publicized, with images of a paint-covered Gemma circulating globally, highlighting a wedding day transformed into a scene reminiscent of a soap opera
