The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Metro Area Crime Suppression (MACS) Unit is marking two years of operation in Montgomery.

) - The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit is marking two years of operation in Montgomery with what the agency called “continued measurable success” in efforts to reduce crime and promote public safety.

Since it formed in June, 2024, the MACS Unit has spent 133 days in active operations, during which time it has made approximately 6,000 traffic stops, executed nearly 1,400 arrest warrants and made 697 arrests, 43 which were juveniles. The unit has also seized 555 guns and 179 illegal machine gun conversion devices, recovered 92 stolen vehicles and made more than 200 drug-related seizures.

According to Secretary Hal Taylor, the unit was developed to meet a rising need for a more focused, mobile team that could help local law enforcement remove violent offenders and illegal weapons from the streets. Governor Kay Ivey meets with ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor for an update to the MACS Unit's ongoing efforts to fight crime in Montgomery.

“What the MACS Unit has achieved in a relatively short time is nothing short of extraordinary,” Taylor said. “And it would not have been possible with the steadfast support of Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Legislature. ” Officials from state, federal and local law enforcement agencies came together to form MACS, deploying a more aggressive strategy to combat crime within the city. This week, Gov.

Ivey met with ALEA Secretary Taylor, State Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Inabinett, Assistant Special Agent in Charge Paul Hayes, who oversees the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit, and Assistant Special Agent in Charge Billy Fulmer, who oversees ALEA SWAT, to receive an in-depth update on MACS and its continued impact in and around Alabama’s Capital City. The governor said the agency leaders provided her a comprehensive overview of MACS operations, highlighting the real-world impact it is having on public safety across the Montgomery area.

“Public safety remains a top priority for the Ivey Administration, and that begins and ends with our Capital City,” Gov Ivey said. “The MACS Unit is absolutely necessary to have operating here in Montgomery and around the entire state... ”Historic Tallassee mill could become data center; residents urge caution
