The couple said the community connection is what keeps customers coming back.
DALE COUNTY, Ala. - The Farmer’s Daughter Country Store has built a following on the drive between Dothan and Troy, with honey as one of its biggest draws.
“Fifty percent or more of our support or people coming in, our clientele coming in to eat daily, are local farmers,” Brooke said. “They come in for lunch, they eat regularly two to three times a week, and we probably couldn’t exist here in this rural part of the county without them,” Brooke said. “They are a great support system for us. ” One product customers ask for repeatedly is honey.
The Hughes said it’s a staple for travelers passing through and for regulars who come back for the taste and the connection to where it comes from. Lynn got into beekeeping about five years ago after the store’s honey supplier couldn’t keep up with demand.
“I told Brooke we needed to get some honeybees, so we ventured off into that and it’s been quite the experience,” Lynn said. The couple discovered bees on the column of their front porch. Lynn Hughes took the column down, found the queen, and began keeping bees.
“The fresh honey from your local bee guy is way better than what you get from your big box store,” Brooke Hughes said.
