WESTLAKE , Ohio - The Westlake Police Department received several calls on Monday evening just after midnight for a car traveling in the opposite direction on I-90.
According to police, the black Hyundai SUV was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-90 in the area of Columbia Road. Officers began to search for the dangerous driver and finally located the suspect vehicle disabled due to damage. Westlake Police said the SUV was still facing the wrong direction in the area of Cahoon Road when officers pulled up.
Luckily, the driver was unharmed and no other vehicles were involved when the vehicle struck the guard rail on the highway. The driver, a 20-year-old Lorain man, said that he didn’t realize he was on the wrong side of the highway, even though vehicles were flashing their lights at him. Westlake Police said he believed that he got on the highway at McKinley Avenue, which reports note was approximately six miles from the crash site.
Police arrested the 20-year-old for an OVI, and an open bottle of Lunazul tequila was found inside the vehicle. The Lorain man was charged with an OVI, driving the wrong way on an interstate, failure to control and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
