Firefighters work on two fires in different areas of Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska smokejumpers did their first fire jump of the season Friday, responding to a wildfire about 5 miles south of Stebbins , according to the U.S. Wildland Fire Service.

It said a crew of eight left from Fort Wainwright and arrived at the fire about two hours after the report. The fire, called the “Little Fire,” was about 10 acres at that time. The fire grew to about 17 acres as of Saturday evening as smokejumper crews worked to mop it up, according to a U.S. Wildland Fire Service spokesperson.

In a separate area of the state, the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection said the Killey River Fire on the Kenai Peninsula was 75% contained as of Sunday and sitting at about 8.2 acres. The fire is burning in the area of the Funny River Fire from 2014, which officials say is slowing progress due to snags and jackstraw trees.
