A sinkhole has forced traffic changes on Stony Battery Road in East Hempfield Township, with repairs expected to take up to 72 hours.

A sinkhole has caused some traffic change s on Stony Battery Road in East Hempfield Township , Lancaster County . Traffic being redirectedCones are up, and traffic is being redirected between Links Avenue and Snapper Dam Road after neighbors noticed the problem growing near their homes.

“A sinkhole was forming. Better get it now before it’s too late,” said Vic Schreck, who lives nearby.'I was very surprised to see it, but I didn't expect it to be my actual driveway that was having the issue,' said neighbor Ada Zorrilla.Schreck said he first noticed something was wrong across the street from his house.“It was slight Monday, and then it was looking pretty bad. So that’s when I called the township,” Schreck said.He said the sinkhole follows earlier problems on the road.“Over the winter, there was a water main break right over here. And water was gushing down the road,” Schreck said. “After they had that all buttoned up, it happened again. They had to come back and redo it. So I assumed this had something to do with the water erosion underneath the road.”Closure expected to last from 48 to 72 hoursEast Hempfield Township says the closure is expected to last anywhere from 48 to 72 hours while repairs are being made to Hempfield Water Authority Infrastructure. One neighbor says she wants to see the sinkholes gone.“I just want them to stop. I wish there was a way that we could know where it’s happening, it’s just very inconvenient for us, especially if we’re driving it every day,” Zorrilla said. This is not the first sinkhole to affect Lancaster County this year. West Earl Township dealt with two sinkholes in February.“Lancaster is pretty old. There’s a lot of old, old lines that are starting to wear out,” Schreck said. “And with the severe weather that we had, I’m expecting to see more of it.” View pictures belowStay with WGAL for updates on this breaking story.
